I love it when a thriller or a horror film's composer understands that the music needs to be more than a surface score. Music needs to run deep in order to form a connection with the audience, and if it doesn't then all it does is mickey mouse the editing to aid in the structured jump moments. However, every now and then a truly talented composer will create a sonic world of suspense and tension, and realize that the score needs to work in layers. Nathan Whitehead accomplishes this with a fantastic thriller score for The Purge.

The Purge starts off eerily enough with a trickling piano motif. It's nothing too off-putting to start with as it eases you into the soundscape. The score then slowly takes you into a world of tones and textures that pull you into a nightmarish tension filled ride. The score works in movements to not only build tension but progress the narrative as well. As strange as it may sound I find that many scores in this genre fail to progress the narrative and just accompany scare moments. Nathan's score fleshes out the situation the characters find themselves in very well and passes that overwhelming dread onto the audience. Once the score hits the third act he notches up the intensity and tempo a bit to give everything just the slightest bit of urgency while never making it overly apparent. It all wraps up nicely in the end to deliver a great overall experience.

The Purge is an exercise in precision and restraint from a composer who has mastered the ability to layer electronic textures to a great suspenseful effect. Whitehead's score is not loud but it can bring the danger factor when it needs to. It never plays cheap tricks or follows structured formulas either, and that in itself makes it a breath of fresh air.
