This review is from: Purpaleanie and Other Permutations (Paperback)
Purpleanie and Other Permutations is a collection of poems by former Calvin College Professor Stanley Wiersma, aka. Sietze Buning. Wiersma is truly the most prominent and articulate folk poet of the Dutch-Reformed tradition. Wiersma speaks to farming and to theology, but more-so to the way of life the Reformed Dutch have made for themselves in America. His is without a doubt the poetry of a specific community, but it remains wonderfully accessible for those outside that community. The well-crafted simplicity of Wiersma's verse and his charming way of dealing with life (for example the book's title poem is an embarassed examination of a young boy's fumbling sexual curiosity) lend his poetry a desirable element of universality. Wiersma's poetry is earthy and gritty, the kind that gets under your nails and makes you want to read just one more before you go to sleep.
