The dramatic color of purple carrots were a great hit!

The seeds had been destroyed by US Customs for not having a Phyto-Sanitary certificate.

I am hoping that the plants that sprout will be good producers.

I never seen Purple Carrots so I ordered them for my Sister who likes to plant and grow all kinds of Fruits and Vegetables. The Seeds arrived very fast all 350 of them in a Tiny Little Plastic Bag. The Seeds were planted about two weeks before the last Frost where She lives, in deep well worked stone free soil, thin 2-3 inches apart, should not be planted in heavy Frost and from Spring to midsummer. Do not transplant as crooked roots may result. Cultivate periodically or mulch to control weeds, keep soil evenly moist, Seeds may be covered with Hessian or similar until Germination. Expect Harvests to start to occur in late Spring, This Plant likes Good Soil, Sun and Water, it takes about 75 days to grow to Maturity

Purple Dragon is an Annual Plant which means it typically only grows best for a single growing Season. My Sister's Purple Dragon Carrots grew 6 to 8 Inches in Length and out of the 350 Seeds 80% Germinated, dozens of Beautiful thick Purple Dragon Carrots with a Sweet almost Spicy Flavor. Great in Salads. These Carrots contain the same amount of Antioxidants and Lycopene as Tomatoes they are good eaten raw, the Purple Skin Fades when Cooked, they are Sweet and Crisp and if you Roast them they taste very Nutty

Purple Dragon Carrots Originated from the United States. To Collect the Seeds, Bag Seedheads to Capture Ripening Seeds, Allow Pods to dry on Plant, break open to Collect the Seeds. Carrot Seeds and other root Crops don't require the High Nitrogen levels found in Miracle-Gro, if you mix one part Miracle-Gro Potting Soil you can germinate Carrots in Pots. Nitrogen Levels are too High for Carrots in Full-Strength Miracle-Gro Potting Soil, besides I don't think I would want to eat them once they are treated with Chemicals! ...Thank You D.D.

I ordered these seeds for a class of young elementary children about dragons and fantasy literature. The order arrived very quickly and the seeds sprouted well. The dramatic color of purple carrots were a great hit! Even picky eaters who regularly turn their noses up at vegetables thought these were very cool! The lesson turned out to be a fantastic way to combine science, literature, with following written directions!

June 20th, 2011: The seeds arrived before the estimated delivery time. I would say it is pretty much impossible to say for sure if there are 350 seeds in the pack without going through the excruciating process of counting each of the tiny buggers. It looks like it probably reaches that total, or close enough though. Anyway, I planted quite a few of the seeds i ordered on June 6th. I still have quite a few seeds left, and didnt count. I kind of just sprinkled them into the plot i had allotted for the carrots. Yesterday, i did a count of the sprouted carrots, and i got 129. Figure i missed a couple, and that is still a very nice tally. They aren't very large yet (the green tops are only about a 1/4 inch tall at this point). So far, i am very pleased with the yield.
I am utilizing a square foot garden method, with approximately five squares for this. For soil, i used a 2 to 2 to 1 mulch to peat to vermiculite mix with osco pellets and a few plant feeder sticks to boot. Did my first watering with Miracle Grow tomato food mixed in and used it a second time a few days ago. The weather has only topped 80 degrees twice so far this year, and was actually in the low 60's yesterday. We've also gotten quite a bit of rain over the last two weeks.
I will update this periodically as they continue to grow, and i learn more about them.

First off, nothing I have purchased from Hirts has produced anything like the pictures, I'm positive they turn the saturation way up on the photos for showmanship. Despite my carrots not looking very much like the photo they were not a disappointment & the seeds came with instructions good enough for a novice planter. I did dock a star or two since what I saw in the photo and what I got were the most different of anything Ive gotten from this seller. In fact I wonder if my pack had atomic red carrots by mistake.

In the Rocky Mountain region around 30% of my seeds sprouted but this was my first time planting carrots. The carrots that resulted were more of a beet red than a purple, making them look like long bright beets. The colored flesh is only a millimeter deep, meaning only a scratch reveals the orange inside. The shape of the carrot was rather normal instead of tubular like online. The flavor was more earthy than a commercial carrot. I still recommend them, the shock value is there and they were great for coloring up sushi, salads, and steaming them takes out any bitterness.

I bought Black Knight carrots, Purple Passion spinach, Purple Dragon carrots, Lunar White carrots, and Italian Lacinato kale - I did not receive them after a month and received a prompt refund from the seller (thank you) - Yesterday I received the package which had been emptied. The Dept of Agriculture had seized the seeds and replaced them with a form letter. These seeds come from Singapore and their import is illegal.

I tried these seeds about 4x in different soils. It would not germinate. A huge disappointment for me and the kids
