This review is from: Purple Dragon Carrot 350 Seeds - Absolutely unique!
I ordered these seeds for a class of young elementary children about dragons and fantasy literature. The order arrived very quickly and the seeds sprouted well. The dramatic color of purple carrots were a great hit! Even picky eaters who regularly turn their noses up at vegetables thought these were very cool! The lesson turned out to be a fantastic way to combine science, literature, with following written directions!

Way off but still enjoyable..,
This review is from: Purple Dragon Carrot 350 Seeds - Absolutely unique!
First off, nothing I have purchased from Hirts has produced anything like the pictures, I'm positive they turn the saturation way up on the photos for showmanship. Despite my carrots not looking very much like the photo they were not a disappointment & the seeds came with instructions good enough for a novice planter. I did dock a star or two since what I saw in the photo and what I got were the most different of anything Ive gotten from this seller. In fact I wonder if my pack had atomic red carrots by mistake.
In the Rocky Mountain region around 30% of my seeds sprouted but this was my first time planting carrots. The carrots that resulted were more of a beet red than a purple, making them look like long bright beets. The colored flesh is only a millimeter deep, meaning only a scratch reveals the orange inside. The shape of the carrot was rather normal instead of tubular like online. The flavor was more earthy than a commercial carrot. I still recommend them, the shock value is there and they were great for coloring up sushi, salads, and steaming them takes out any bitterness.

June 20th, 2011: The seeds arrived before the estimated delivery time. I would say it is pretty much impossible to say for sure if there are 350 seeds in the pack without going through the excruciating process of counting each of the tiny buggers. It looks like it probably reaches that total, or close enough though. Anyway, I planted quite a few of the seeds i ordered on June 6th. I still have quite a few seeds left, and didnt count. I kind of just sprinkled them into the plot i had allotted for the carrots. Yesterday, i did a count of the sprouted carrots, and i got 129. Figure i missed a couple, and that is still a very nice tally. They aren't very large yet (the green tops are only about a 1/4 inch tall at this point). So far, i am very pleased with the yield.
I am utilizing a square foot garden method, with approximately five squares for this. For soil, i used a 2 to 2 to 1 mulch to peat to vermiculite mix with osco pellets and a few plant feeder sticks to boot. Did my first watering with Miracle Grow tomato food mixed in and used it a second time a few days ago. The weather has only topped 80 degrees twice so far this year, and was actually in the low 60's yesterday. We've also gotten quite a bit of rain over the last two weeks. I will update this periodically as they continue to grow, and i learn more about them.
