5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
I received this soundtrack as a birthday gift and it is the best CD in my collection and the best birthday gift I've ever received. The music inspires, uplifts, and relaxes you. "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)" and "Maybe God is Trying to Tell you Somthin' are my favorites because I like the messages in both songs. When listening to the CD, it takes me back...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Music Short Songs
This CD has some wonderful music on it, however there is nothing beyond what was literally in the movie. So there are some great songs that are only 30 seconds long. That was quite disappointing.

"Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)" and "Maybe God is Trying to Tell you Somthin' are my favorites because I like the messages in both songs. When listening to the CD, it takes me back to the scenes in the movie when that particular song is playing. I love Whoopi's expression when Shug is singing "Sister" to her. It always brings a smile to my face. I will definitely enjoy this CD for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites, March 18, 2001

This review is from: Color Purple (Audio Cassette)
The soundtrack to the move of The Color Purple is one of my favorite albums of all time. I have been listening to it since I bought my extended play cassette version when I was in high school (and had to save up to afford it). Not only does listening to the album take one through the emotional experience of watching the movie (or reading the book), but it also stands alone. The music is sophisticated and deeply touching - often evoking a visceral and spiritual response that is damn near inspirational. I cannot find words to describe how much Quincy Jones' music from The Color Purple has influenced my life and my musical sensabilities. Simply brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the Most Beautiful Music Your Will Ever Hear!!, June 11, 2005

Words alone cannot begin to describe the beautiful music of these two cds! I am fortunate enough to own 2 original copys of both The Color Purple & Roots, both cds are incredibly inspirational and proof of Quincy Jones' Genius. The music is so powerful, at times it makes you smile, at times it'll make you cry, but above all, its music that leaves you with such an appreciation for love & life, its a true treasure to have. The music lifts your spirits, its a combination of classical, spiritual, blues and jazz. I wish everyone could experience the power of this music, its amazing, it ranks at the top of my music library as some of the best music I've ever heard. Although long out of print, I'm not surprise at how expensive the asking price has grown for those who have copies in their possession. If you can get your hands on a copy, trust me, its worth it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotionally Moving, February 8, 2000
Breathtaking & Beautiful! This soundtrack gave me the chills. I cried listening to it just as I did watching the movie. The movie & the cd take you on an emotionally ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, July 26, 1999

The music captures, effectively, the sound of the underlyng drama. It is a brilliant example of what a soundtrack should be. Its depiction of life as experienced by African Americans of that period is brilliant.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST INVIGERATING SOUNDTRACKS THAT HAS EVER BEEN PUT ON THE SHELF. ONE SONG IN PARTICULAR, "GOD IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING". THIS SONG CAN TELL THE WHOLE MOVIE AND YOU FEEL IT IN YOUR SOUL. I CRY EVERY TIME I HEAR IT. TO THIS DAY I CRY WHEN I HEAR IT

5.0 out of 5 stars Miss Celie's Blues, November 9, 2006

I tried all over the internet just to purchase this single, Miss Celie's Blues, and I could not. So I had to buy the whole CD. Unfortunately, it is the only song I really wanted, but it was worth buying the whole CD. It's such an empowering song.

I have always been a fan of the movie as well as the soundtrack. However, until recently the soundtrack was always too expensive. Now, the "Q" has come to his senses, "us" can afford to buy the soundtrack to one of Spielberg's best films.

It will move you and take you back to each scene with a variety of musical genres. IT'S THE BEST!!!

This is a good cd, although it was not exactly what I was expecting. I was hoping for more lyrics in the songs rather than just the music, as it was sung in the movie. Although I love the music just the same.
