More About the Author

My name is Gary Rodriguez, and I live in California. I'm the president of LeaderMetrix Inc., a consulting company that specializes in senior-level executive coaching, organizational development, and conflict resolution.
Previously, I worked for eighteen years in the radio business as an executive where I spent several years as one of the original managers of Infinity Broadcasting.
Following a successful radio career I became the president of a non-profit organization for a season.
As a young man, I spent a tour of duty in the U.S. Army where I was recognized as the youngest Drill Instructor in the Army's history at age 18 years. I was also awarded the Silver Star (the nation's third highest award for valor) while serving in a combat zone.
Over the past few years, I've written three non-fiction books and then I decided to write a novel.
My first book, Purpose-Centered Public Speaking, was published in 2009 and was re-published this summer (2014). Then I wrote a companion workbook designed to help people implement the principles taught in my first book. Next, I wrote Overcoming The Fear Of Public Speaking. And this past year, I wrote my first novel, Escape Through The Wilderness.

Dr. Rodriguez's book is refreshing and very insightful. As somebody that is in front of an audience on a weekly basis (I am a minister), I find that this book is a great tool and it will help me refine my speaking abilities. I really liked chapter 5 in particular. This chapter impressed me so much that I am seriously considering switching techniques. I have used a certain technique for the past 8 years but after reading this chapter I was moved to consider something that makes more sense. The book is challenging (in a good way) since it foments you moving from what you are used to doing to doing what improves your ROI. I have suggested this book to a bunch of my friends with the same profession I have and I will continue to do so.

As a grandparent, retired CEO, board member, angel investor, and insatiable book reader, I reviewed "Purpose Driven Public Speaking," with hope for new insights. I was richly rewarded with an easy reading, often personal, and useful presentation. Gary has captured a nice balance, leveraging his personal experience and excellent counsel. Most "how to" books are truly boring. This one is not. The reader, as a novice public speaker or experienced hand, should come away with improved capabilities to deliver great rewarding presentations. I have already recommended this book to many friends and I intend to purchase several more as gifts.

'Purpose-Centered Public Speaking' by Dr. Gary Rodriguez states on the jacket cover - 'How to Develop and Deliver Purposeful Talks, Speeches, and Presentations with Less Fear and More Confidence'. This self development book review sheds light on how the book does this.

Purpose-Centered Public Speaking - WHY WAS THIS BOOK WRITTEN?

The author begins by explaining that the book is a glimpse into his life's story, celebrating his "continuing journey and ongoing development as a public speaker." The aim of the book appears to be two-fold:

1. To empower readers to improve their ability to speak in public.
2. To show a "simple, purposeful and systematic approach to public speaking."

Even though he has been involved in public speaking for nearly four decades, the author says his growth as a speaker is continually developing. To hear that even an experienced speaker is an eternal student of public speaking makes you realise just what an art this is.

Purpose-Centered Public Speaking - WHAT DOES IT COVER?

The author recounts personal stories throughout which makes you feel that he is speaking to you directly. His section on body language and how certain mannerisms enhance your talk would be particularly interesting to anyone giving presentations, talks or speeches, whatever field you are in.

The many public speaking tips include an interesting section on how to calculate the number of words needed in your talk for different time-slots. In the second half of the book he brings together the various tips and tools, and takes you through the development of a specific topic, from initial preparation to its concluding words.

As frightening as it sounds, life is a progression of "public speaking" events. Dr. Gary Rodriquez's book is a valuable guide to build your confidence as you go through his clear and easy process for creating and delivering powerful presentations. This book is both practical and entertaining. Holly K. Rauser, Etiquette Coach

In the interests of full disclosure, I'm the editor Gary Rodriguez chose to edit Purpose Driven Public Speaking, primarily, he said, because I was not just an editor, but an author with many years' speaking experience under my belt. When I first began to speak professionally in the home-business industry in the 1980s, my primary goal was to educate people on how to start and succeed in a business at home and, of course, to sell as many books as possible at the end of a conference speech or day-long workshop.

Because I knew my topic so well and had no fear of speaking in public, it never occurred to me to buy a book on how to construct and deliver a good speech. I learned to speak simply by trial-and-error until I had mastered my presentation skills and knew how to get my workshop students and conference audiences to relate to my messages. But it took me awhile to develop skill as a speaker, and I do not recommend my way of breaking into public speaking because having a plan before you open your mouth in public is much better than operating on gut instincts as I did.

With Gary's book in hand, you'll have a step-by-step guide on exactly how to plan a speech for specific audiences, then develop and deliver it with confidence. (The chapter, "Courage Under Fire," will be worth the price of the book to many beginners.) As I worked through Gary's book, I was impressed by his ability to teach his topic so well in print. I found the book to be not only well structured and easy to understand, but truly interesting.
