5.0 out of 5 stars Implications far beyond the business world., May 24, 2009
This review is from: The Purpose Linked Organization: How Passionate Leaders Inspire Winning Teams and Great Results (Hardcover)
This is a brilliant, fun book to read with implications far beyond the business world. The opening chapter presents a very compelling, unassailable case for honoring purpose and passion in the workplace. But it's not just another boring book about management styles. Love and Cugnon come from a business background, but they have written a text grounded in positive psychology.

For decades, psychologists have attempted to stress the importance of honoring individual temperaments and passions (not simply skills) in job assignments, but I can now see that we have not used the right language to capture corporate attention. Love and Cugnon have done just that with their imaginative and well-researched book. They provide us with work possibilities that can nurture the soul, not simply deliver a paycheck. They have raised the bar in the world of business leadership and beyond.

I'm a clinical psychologist with a good deal of insight into my own thoughts and behaviors, but I learned about myself, family, and friends within these pages. This book can make sense of our past choices and assist in directing our futures. I am not overstating my case when I say it can inform and transform lives, and therefore organizations. I will be giving this book to everyone whose well-being is important to me.

The book is thought provoking, well organized, and a true guide to personal fulfillment in the workplace. The authors must have put a lot of time and research into presenting their ideas. I highly recommend this for business leaders and HR professionals from all industries who desire a better understanding on how to capitalize on the concepts of passion and purpose and how they impact human productivity.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engage your workforce meaningfully, October 22, 2009
This review is from: The Purpose Linked Organization: How Passionate Leaders Inspire Winning Teams and Great Results (Hardcover)
This is a great read. I have been pondering how we can engage our talented workforce in a more meaningful manner for them. In this book, Alaina and Marc have provided a concise framework and practical means to understand and unleash passion of people in the workplace. It is exciting to see what a humble, inspirational leader can do to transform the performance of an organization in this economically challenged time.

The book gives paths for individual, team, and enterprise to embark on the journey to purpose and harness the passion. The online profiler is very helpful.

Adding an "individual fulfillment" objective to measure how well the individuals apply their passion to their role at work is quite creative. I am thinking to try it with my team.

5.0 out of 5 stars A competitive advantage for any individual or company, September 19, 2009

This review is from: The Purpose Linked Organization: How Passionate Leaders Inspire Winning Teams and Great Results (Hardcover)
This book is a brilliant solution to a major problem the business world is facing today - sub-optimal employee engagement. Many companies have been through massive layoffs and are left to manage the aftermath of excessive work- loads, budget cuts and disillusioned employees who are re-evaluating their loyalty to the company. Applying the concepts and tools developed by Love and Cugnon will most certainly help retain top talent.

From an individual perspective, I enjoyed the book and the online Passion Profiler, but what surprised me most was the value of the in-depth report and personal interview with Love and Cugnon. My expectations were already high and they exceeded them! Those who have been working for well over a decade may not think of pursuing the exercise past the online profiler, but you may be surprised by what you learn. For example, your fourth archetype, which you don`t see in the online Passion Profiler, may be almost as high as your tertiary archetype. Knowing yourself is the first step to winning in any situation and the Purpose Linked tools are indispensible in this regard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read - Great insight into yourself and those around you, July 31, 2009
This review is from: The Purpose Linked Organization: How Passionate Leaders Inspire Winning Teams and Great Results (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed reading "The Purpose Linked Organization". We all come to the world "hard-wired" in what turns us on in life and the work-place. The 10 passion profile archetypes are real and a great way of recognising why we and others get excited by some things we do more than others. This book is practical and useful for thinking about how to get more out of yourself and the teams we work in. It is compelling reading and it is timely for my quest to increase my own self awareness.

The Passion Profiler is the most powerful tool for personal and professional development that I have ever come across. It goes way beyond any other self-assessment tests that have come before. The passion archetypes that Love and Cugnon define and articulate in The Purpose Linked Organization make sense on every level. Businesses and organizations that take advantage of the this resource will develop their most valuable asset--their employees--and will, no doubt, become healthier and more productive.

This review is from: The Purpose Linked Organization: How Passionate Leaders Inspire Winning Teams and Great Results (Hardcover)
Our best work is accomplished when we are engaged, excited and the task at hand is meaningful. Knowing this to be true, Love and Cugnon have successfully addressed the link between passion and purpose with regard to self discovery and leadership. Their book is a fast moving journey, filled with insights and revelations that lead us to better understand ourselves and others through the Passion Profiles. Aside from the authors' useful intention to help identify the passions of leaders and employees to maximize talent and heal organizations, the book is fun to read and the online assessment tool is a real gift. This book is both intellectually and emotionally satisfying!

This book was recommended to me by a colleague. The 10 passion archetype are easy to identify with and motivating to read about. It challenged me to reflect on my own professional journey. The passion profile that comes with the book is a must! I was inspired to share the outcomes with my boss. I'd have to say that it was a great catalyst for a profound conversation. Now, guess who went and the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's not often that a Business book gets dog- eared from use. This one will be the exception in your library., July 15, 2009
By
Lead Right (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Purpose Linked Organization: How Passionate Leaders Inspire Winning Teams and Great Results (Hardcover)
The Purpose Linked Organization is a journey through the deep passions which direct our behaviour in everything we do. As the first significant advance for years in the field of Psychological Profiling in the business environment this book is a well balanced combination of scientific insight and practical application.

A light narrative style makes for easy yet engrossing reading without trivializing the material.
Organized to tell a story, the most fascinating chapters are those dissecting the "Passion Profiles" each of which enlists the aid of a well known leader (not necessarily from the business world) to put a very human face on the various archetypes. Adopting this approach also reveals some of the more classic external manifestations of internal drives that will help us improve our understanding of one another without resorting to caricature. This centre portion of the book is laid out in a way that makes the knowledge it contains highly accessible and encourages frequent review. The profiles are precise and highly distinct- there are no bland "horoscopes" here.

Presenting the results of thousands of interviews and on- line tests that have led to the establishment of the ten archetypes would in itself be a considerable achievement of great academic and intellectual interest. Providing insight into how to manage the profile, its strengths and vulnerabilities and which pairings work well or badly together and under what circumstances makes this a management tool of true value.
Almost as a bonus, The Purpose Linked Organization gives the manager a tool to understand how closely other team members associate themselves with the company as a whole and the degree to which they will reflect on their work and life situations. Taken together these insights can help highlight potential flight risks and the degree to which leadership intervention can impact the situation. Not always may realignment be possible but by removing much guesswork a mutually satisfactory outcome is more likely.

For most readers the most obvious and immediate application of the Passion Profiler process will be in the formation and management of teams. Skills are a necessary but not sufficient consideration when assembling project groups. A team that succeeded magnificently last time may fail spectacularly the next if it lacks the proper balance of Passion Profiles. Anyone whose job or bonus depends on avoiding that scenario should buy a copy of The Purpose Linked Organization today!
