After years of writing off techno as being less interesting, more programatic and ultimately less cve than drum and bass, I finally came across the work of Jeff Mills. I started with Live at The Liquid Room, which for all its dynamism was a bit uninvolving due to the short track time (although if I was actually there in the club, this might have been a good thing) Then I bought Waveform 1 and was blown away by the subtle manipulation of rythm and complexity of each piece. It made a lot of drum and bass seem quite programatic in comparisson. On my last trip to Europe I picked up Purposemaker along with a few drum and bass compilations and the new leftfield album. They were all impressive (especially left field) but the Jeff Mills work had a level of invention and genius that has completely changed my view of Detroit Techno. I have also always been a fan of Man Ray and won an award on a student film which had what I wanted to be a man ray look put into the fluid motion of Alain Renais or Kenneth Anger. So, I respect anyone who is big on Man Ray. Mills pieces each slowly draw you into this introspective world that is as beautiful, daring, original and evocative as the photos of Man Ray. Somebody once told me that tachno wasn't music. I'd like them to hear this and still say that.

Although I'm not always in the mood to listen to Mills, I always look forward to those times I do. Some of the most stunning and original music in my 500 CD collection. People years from now will be talking of Grooverider and Jeff Mills in the same breath as Coltrane and Davis as some of the most innovative musical minds of the century.

The title says it well, this is a compilation of detroit-styled grooves, banging all the way.
While to me the 'album' loses effect after the first half, taken individually the tracks are deep, funky and damn banging.
And of course, 'The Bells' is there, making any dancefloor-head gurn like a maniac.
Reccomended for those who have heard other Jeff Mills stuff and liked it.

Like the Auto industry--labeled "Detroit" by American journalists--this was like the 1970's for G.M.. Mills style, at its best, was this album. Like another review, spin Alarms, Bells, or Paradise, and you will have a pleased audiance.

I find that some of the influence of this album made its way on a sonderweg and influenced the Tresor/Berlin movements; it can be heard in later artists that Mill's inspired.

Mill's sound, as it might be labeled "Detroit," is clean and simple. It's 4/4 at it's best; never polluted by stupid lyrics or anything that shouldn't be there. If you're looking for something to get your floor dancing, look no further than this album.

How can you say anything bad about a cd that includes the Detroit Techno Classics "Alarm and The Bells". Both of these tracks can be played at anytime during a party and the crowd will love them. I think Mills was hitting his Peak during the production years of the tracks on this cd, although some are from earlier Waveform days. Also prepare yourself for duplicate tracks if you buy some of the other compilations As Mills Likes to Recycle his music through time.

I first saw Jeff Mills live at T in the Park 99 - a music festival in scotland - and he was amazing. Just like this album. If you like this kind of music, then i suggest you buy this cd.

Despite being overplayed, Mill's purpose maker material is still, in my opinion, his best yet. Solid, funky, and beautifully crafted, the influence of these tracks on modern techno is undeniable. Launching the minimal/tribal sound thats still going strong today, they continue to act as a reference point for producers like Sims, Beyer, Mac etc.
If you have turntables, then seek out the vinyl releases. There's nothing better then dimming the lights, cranking up the volume, and rinsing a bit of purpose maker.

This is definitive heavy house / techno. It doesn't get much better. Everyone into techno should listen to Mills at some point, he is the person to beat. Don't miss out.
