5.0 out of 5 stars The Purrs offer nostalgia, more..., October 13, 2006
This review is from: Purrs (Dig) (Audio CD)
The Purrs have quietly emerged from obscurity and are becoming one of the hot new 'buzz bands' in indie-rock. And this is not just in their music hot-bed hometown of Seattle, but across the nation as well. With a rising internet presence and support from the always influential Seattle tastemaker station KEXP, The Purrs are poised to take it to the next level. The songs are psychedelic, dreamy, nostalgic and catchy. The Jasons (guitarists Jason Atkin and Jason Milne) write reverb heavy guitar licks that is sure to possess more than one teenager to pick up an axe of their own. Lead singer and bassist `Jima' (pronounced Jim A) writes straightforward lyrics while his voice rests comfortably between Richard Ashcroft, Lou Reed and David Bowie. The same could be said for the music. At times one might recall the jangly psych-pop of The Velevet Underground or The Dandy Warhols while another recalls the brit-pop brilliance of a band like The Verve. However (and thankfully), The Purrs mix things up enough to create a sound that might be familiar, but still remains refreshingly unique. It's hard to pick one or two standout tracks because there is something here for everyone. Just be sure to listen all the way through so you appreciate the dreamy and psychedelic journey The Purrs will take you on. If you do, you're bound to travel again!
