Book Description

August 31, 1998
Unbound from stiff-upper-lip stagnation by sudden widowhood, Adelaide Simcoe has yielded to her creative impulses Ñ and the pull of the volatile avant-garde fugu gallery. But when a performance art piece goes horribly wrong at the opening of Adelaide's first group show, she sets out to find who hated the gallery's mercurial co-founder enough to engineer such a horrible death.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ten Little Indians meets Valley of the Dolls." (Venue )

"Kramer's eccentric ensemble of characters and his amphetamine-driven style steal the show... It's not often we get to see alternative art culture portrayed from the inside with such comfortable authority and easy humour."

(Xtra )

"An entertaining marriage of classic whodunnit and a spoof of world-class urban pretentiousness."

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Writer, Missing One Ingredient, February 3, 1999

This review is from: The Pursemonger of Fugu: A Bathroom Mystery (Paperback)
Greg Kramer writes very well. He plots very well. But I was put off by his lack of empathy -- seemingly at times of interest, even -- in any of the otherwise vivid characters that he has created here. Adelaide is a brilliant creation, but I felt the author was keeping her at a distance, not allowing her to come fully to life. Or .. is this how PoMo fiction is supposed to be?

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding debut novel by a brilliant and witty author., December 3, 1998
This review is from: The Pursemonger of Fugu: A Bathroom Mystery (Paperback)
Mr. Kramer has proved himself to be a brilliant writer in addition to being an amazing actor. He has combined mystery, humor, and the eccentricities of the art world in one great novel. His heroine is a wonderfully real older woman. I can not say enough to promote this book. Brilliant and sophisticated are only the tip of the iceberg. A "must- have -collectible" for fans of Mr. Kramer's "Forever Knight" days. I am anxiously awaiting his next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvelous mystery proving art can be deadly!, November 30, 1998
This review is from: The Pursemonger of Fugu: A Bathroom Mystery (Paperback)
Author Greg Kramer takes both the artist and the most non-art orientated readers into Toronto, Canada's funky art scene through the eyes of Adelaide Simcoe, a widow out to explore the world. An accident (or is it?) during a bizarre bit of performance art lures Adelaide into the mysteries surrounding the incident. Using Adelaide as the main character is a stroke of genius. She's one of the most believable and strongest female characters I've witnessed in a very long time (if ever). The author must really be in touch with his inner matron! The circumstances and surroundings may be strange to some readers, but they're new to Adelaide as well so learn, observe, and live through her eyes. As for me, I really enjoyed recognizing aspects people I know in the various characters.
