Awards and Grants:
His major research grants have been funded by the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Spencer Foundation and the Social Science Research Council. Awards include the NM Governor's Distinguished Public Service Award, the Franklin J. Goodnow Award for Distinguished Service from the APSA, the Regents' Meritorious Service Award, the APSA/COSCP Recognition Award and the Navajo Nation's Chief Manuelito Award.

Professor Garcia served as President of the University of New Mexico for a one-year term, August 2002-July 2003. He has also served as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and Provost.

Recent & Representative Publications:
He is the author of numerous articles, book chapters and reviews. The most recent of the eleven books he has authored, co-authored or edited are: Hispanics and the US Political System: Moving into the Mainstream (2007) Governing New Mexico (UNM Press, 2006); Pursuing Power: Latinos and the Political System (Notre Dame Press, 1997); New Mexico Government (3rd. edition, UNM Press, 1994); and Latino Voices: Mexican, Puerto Rican and Cuban Perspectives on American Politics (Westview Press, 1992).
