Dreamy electro-Brit-pop,
By
This review is from: Pursuit of Happiness (Audio CD)
Like so many of my favorite artists, Weekend Players would still be unknown to me if I had to rely on radio to introduce me to good music. Fortunately, I discovered them through the "Ultra Chill" compilation CDs, which have been consistently worth the price in terms of suggesting new artists to investigate. The first song I heard was "Jericho" (on Ultra Chill 04 - another good buy) and I was immediately smitten by the smooth grooves and Rachel Foster's Tracey Thorn-like voice. Many people have compared Weekend Players to EBTG, but they also compare favorably to trip-pop groups like Morcheeba and electronica artists like Chicane. The mood here is relaxed and sultry, the tunes are infectious and the vocals are lovely. What more could you ask?

Yes, please, may I have another?,

I love, love, love this CD. It has been in constant rotation (at home, in my car, at work, on my iPod, at the gym) since 2003. This tops my list of desert island CDs.
It is so dreamy and relaxing, but not in the obvious formulaic downtempo way. Rachel Foster's voice sends me spinning. And can Andy Cato do any wrong? With Groove Armada, Weekend Players and Caia under his belt, I think not. I actually bought this CD on a lark - I loved the album cover, the artist's name, and it was at a "new artist" price of $9.99. I didn't realize until later that Andy Cato was the mastermind behind the project, or I would have bought it the day it was released. "Jericho" is easily one of my all time favorite songs. Rachel Foster's voice on this song, along with the sensual lyrics, leaves you wanting more, and do they deliver more. The entire CD is lazy and sensuous, so sophisticated without feeling at all contrived. Every song is a standout, one melting into the other, yet all with a distinctive sound. "I'll Be There", "Best Days of Our Lives", "Pursuit of Happiness" and "Higher Ground", along with "Jericho" are forever etched into my being. I know that this is one of those CDs that I will carry with me through life. Dramatic, I know, but that is how much I love it. My message? Buy, play, repeat. I pray there is a sophomoric release for this side project and the sooner, the better.

The pursuit of happiness by Weekend players is a pursuit well worth your time. As an Everything but the girl fan, I was really pleased to hear a similar type of feel. If you like Tracy Thorn's vocals, you'll love Rachel Foster's! She sounds like Sade in a couple of songs, which is not a bad thing at all. "Higher ground" is a track that will no doubt be this CD's best even though it's repetitive nature might initially turn off some, but you can't deny this track's sensual and chill nature. I've been told by a couple of married friends of mine that they love to listen to it because of reasons that you will discover once you listen to it. There are other standouts on this CD such as "I'll be there", "21st century" and "Best days of our lives" which sounds as if Sade sung it herself. I really loved this CD when I initially got it sometime ago as an import and this version includes 2 remixes. I definitely would recommend this CD as it definitely gets you going in all sorts of ways. They really have an excellent mix of chill and dance music that I really liked. I can't wait to hear from more of this duo!

I first heard "Jericho" on Metropolis on KCRW. I just knew I had to have it. At first I was convinced that it was sung by Julia Fordham.Buy this CD for lyrics like "Come fill my senses up with you."You won't regret it!

Wow! What a great find this was. Every track is just awesome and the album is not repetitive, there is a lot of variety. This is one of the few albums I have that I can listen to over and over and enjoy it every time. The production and vocals on this album are top notch.

Like many other listeners I came across this amazing debut by luck. I was surfing around to see what was new. I am so happy to have come across Weekend Players, but I'm even more excited about the potential they have.
The album is very defined. It's perfect harmony between vocals, a hint of electronica and great down beats (the vocals are really amazing). It's smooth, clean, and quality. I think the title says it all. The album is a pursuit of happiness, the feeling of calm fulfillment. Just like lying on the beach on a beautiful day with a nice cool breeze, and you have nothing to worry about... at all.

Falling in Love,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pursuit of Happiness (Audio CD)
OK, I was falling in love when I had the pleasure of receiving this as a birthday gift. It was really a wonderful soundtrack to have at the time. The music is simply hauntingly beautiful and can make your haeart ache (in a good way) It stays with you and has made very nostalgic wehnever I listen to it. This CD holds a special place in my heart and brings me to a place that I will always cherish. It was that powerful for me. I know it had a lot to do with timing but I think you'll understand when you hear it. I would say 8-9 songs are absolutely stellar which is rare. Buy and listen to it a lot.

Still never far from my player,

This is one of my favorite cds that I play often - and considering I have over 2500 cds...
When I first heard this, I thought Rachel Foster sounded like a cross between Enya and Annie Lenox. Her vocals are superb. The arrangements are perfection. Jericho is so sensual. Francois K (one of my favorite djs) did a remix of 21st Century that kicks...) Everyone that I have given this cd to has loved it.

As huge and sprawling as my music collection is, I don't dish out five star reviews very often. So, before I get into the details, I urge you, if you are even remotlely considering this CD... buy it now... you will not regret your purchase. Having said that, it is a rarity for me to find an album that stands as a whole piece of work without any filler material. This absolute work of art is one of them. Each and every track is more beautiful than the next. It is laid-back, lush,... soothing, upbeat, and introspective all at once. The female vocals sound divine and the lyrics aren't just throwaway garbage. Even the two bonus tracks (remixes) added to the US release are fantastic. I simply can't praise this CD enough.

This is one my favorite albums of all time,
By the cherry "bomb" (california) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pursuit of Happiness (Audio CD)
I have had this album for about 3 years now and I still love it. It's a work of art from start to finish and Jericho, Higher Ground, and Pursuit of Happiness are some of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Overall it's pretty chill, downtempo electronica, but where WP stands apart is melodic quality of their music. It's emotionally engaging and you could definitely use this as a *cough* soundtrack for some Very Fun Adult Moments.
My only complaint is that the Subway song irks me for romanticizing being homeless. |
