Editorial Reviews

Review

The film emphasizes that Washington was not the wooden figure often deified by historians and biographers, but was a highly intelligent man who was aware of and struggled mightly to overcome his weaknesses and character flaws. It also examines how his beliefs about slavery and American independence evolved during this period and how those changes influenced his personal life and public leadership. --School Library Journal, May 2007

Product Description

Pursuit of Honor is the most important documentary ever produced about George Washington. Principle photography began in January 2005 and wrapped in June 2006. In the span of 16 months, Paladin accumulated about 50 hours of raw footage in several of America's most precious Colonial-era sites. We walked in the footsteps of Washington, shooting in the Allegheny National Forest, at the Hall of Burgesses, Governor's Palace, and Raleigh Tavern in Colonial Williamsburg, inside the historic Wren Building at the College of William & Mary, at the Carlyle House in Alexandria, Virginia, and in the mansion and across acres of lands at George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens. a feature documentary motion picture about George Washington, began in January 2005, with production progressing throughout the year at locations in several states. Pursuit of Honor: The Rise of George Washington explores two dynamic themes: Washington's belief in Providence, and indeed the incredible protection of higher powers that allowed Washington to escape near-death experiences; and the growth of character of a man who shed the shallow vanity of youth in pursuit of honor. George Washington made himself into a man capable of founding the most powerful nation in the world. In Pursuit of Honor we explore his early military career in the French & Indian War and understand how these experiences shaped his approach to the Revolution. We see how his management of Mount Vernon prepared him to administer the Continental Army. Ours is an accessible George Washington not the cold and aloof character portrayed time and again in documentaries produced by PBS or the History Channel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good DVD on George Washington, February 26, 2007

Paladin scores again with the final installment in its trilogy on George Washington! (see my reviews of _ George Washington's First War: The Battles for Fort Duquesne_ and _When the Forest Ran Red_) This installment shows us GW's life from the end of the French and Indian War to the Revolution. The coverage is quite deep and not not superficial in the least. However, since it covers the interwar years, we don't get as much 'shoot em up' battles scenes that we got in the first two installments. Nevertheless, this DVD examines how GW grew during those years, what forces played on him to become a revolutionary, and how he influenced those around him. This is perhaps the most important chapter leading up to his break with the Mother Country. You won't want to miss this important, in-depth DVD on George Washington.

To continue the saga, you might want to watch _The History Channel Presents Washington the Warrior_, which covers GW's time as general in the Revolution.

4.0 out of 5 stars George Washington's Pursuit of Honor, February 10, 2009
By Happy Camper "Duke" (Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
This in an excellent DVD that consists primarily of several reputable historians views of the background of George Washington that led to his acceptance of the awesome responsibility as Commander-in-Chief of the fledgeling American army. The views expressed by the historians cover the period from Washington's initial engagement in the French and Indian Was to his assumption of command of the American Army. Throughout this period Washington was engaged in honing his own image as a gentleman with impecable honor, and the code he lived by reflected that.

I gave this DVD four rather than five stars because I was disappointed it did not cover the period of his youth and formative years, and the influence of that period and his home life that was the background for his character. This is an excellent DVD for all interested in the life of the Father of our Great Nation.

5.0 out of 5 stars well done, February 11, 2008

This seems to be a very well put together documentary. I've enjoyed it immensely and have learned a great deal. My only beef with it - too much on the honor emphasis.

This movie was the best in the trilogy(When the Forest Ran Red & GW's First War).I especially enjoyed the realistic battle footage of Braddock's Defeat and Pontiac's War.
