I happened upon this book quite accidentally whilst perusing my bookshelves and decided to give it a read. I had no idea that it was written by one of the famous Mitford sisters, but after finding that out the book made a bit more sense to me. Nancy Mitford describes the type of life that one can only hope to glimpse or imagine about in this novel. The main character Linda, personifies the type of woman that's both tragic and silly at the same time. Utterly hopeless in all she does, Linda's one true great character trait is her ability to skim over the surface or put up a front of perfect tranquility and happiness. The novel also explores, with the use of Linda as a foil, other of her siblings personalities in what can only be described as an eccentric buntch that make up the Radlett family. It's a quick read, but when you finsh you kinda of don't see the point of the journey. Perhaps it's only ment to be a glimpse into a "great" family. It's also part of a trilogy, so perhaps it makes more sense reading them all three and not letting this one novel stand alone.
