An easy read and very good character development.

All of us who read "drama type books" have favorite authors and Gene Hackman is now one of my favorite authors - can't wait for the next book!

All there is to recommend are memorable characters, sharp plotting, and enough suspense for two books.

Gene Hackman is no stranger. As two time Academy Award winning actor, he is a household name worldwide. He acted in such classics as The French Connection, The Conversation , Unforgiven , Superman , and Young Frankenstein. He retired from acting in 2004 and began a second career as a novelist. After co-writing a number of historical novels, he wrote a fine western titled Payback at Morning Peak. And moving forward from there, he is crossing over to thriller with his latest novel.

Pursuit is the story of Sergeant Julie Worth of the Missouri State Patrol. She’s a no-nonsense cop, sharp and strong-willed. When she takes down a shopping mall shooter, the Missouri State Criminal Investigation Unit hands Julie cold case duty. Confined to the office, Worth browses through old files when one particular case involving the disappearance of a teenager catches her attention. When she is unintentionally drawn into an investigation that closes in on the kidnapper, things begin to take a dangerous turn. Cheryl, Worth’s teenage daughter, is kidnapped.

Now it is up to Worth to get her daughter back. But Charles Clegg is no ordinary soul. He is a monster, who kidnapped and killed women. Pushing herself almost off the edge, Worth hunts for Clegg while Cheryl’s life is hanging in the balance.

Pursuit by Gene Hackman is wonderfully crafted. It will keep you on the edge of your seat with its gripping story and sharp plot.

Gene Hackman is a household name as a result of his acting pursuits. The French Connection, The Conversation and No Way Out (watch that film again and you’ll be amazed at how he stole it right out from under Kevin Costner) are my favorites, and certainly you will have others. Hackman is retired from acting, but he definitely hasn’t retired, having co-written a number of historical novels and on his own penned a fine western, PAYBACK AT MORNING PEAK, in recent years. However, Hackman has not been getting his rightful due as an author. That may well change with his latest novel, which marks his first attempt at a modern thriller.

PURSUIT has some interesting echoes of the work of Elmore Leonard and Thomas Harris reverberating through it (not a bad echo to have, by any means), but Hackman most definitely has his own style. It passes my first and most important test when reading any book by a figure popular in another artistic medium: “Would this be a great book by Bob Smith?” Yes, indeed. I actually forgot that I was reading a book by that Gene Hackman by the time I had reached page 10.

The Leonard echo is Sergeant Julie Worth of the Missouri State Patrol. She’s not afraid to mix it up, whether it be with a nutcase shooting up a shopping mall or an ex-husband she cannot stand the sight of, and she’s not afraid of getting injured either, and repeatedly so. She keeps coming back, like Buford Pusser, though she is much better looking by all accounts. As for the Thomas Harris echo, that would come in the form of Charles Clegg, the monster who lives and works ever so quietly among us. Clegg is introduced within a vignette indicating that he has been doing what he does --- abduct, terrorize and murder women --- for a long time.

I first came across a novel by Mr. Hackman about Andersonville the hell hole of prisons during the civil war. Ever since I believe I read all his novels. This one "Pursuit" has to be one of the best murder/crime novel that I read in quite awhile...I think better than "Patterson" He is one multi-talented individual with no limits.

I found this to be just worth a 3 star rating, it is kind of mediocre and the story has been done by nearly every author.

Not really any suspense to it, not really any thriller to it, I had a hard time with the characters as they just seemed oh hum and I doubt if law enforcement says please and thank you or you're so kind, etc etc, that was just hard to swallow.

The characters, to me, did not have a lot of likeable qualitys about them and nothing memorable about them. About half into the story it just gets kind of drug down by all the old hum drum that everyone else has done.

I might give Hackman another try but won't stick with him if his writing doesn't improve.

The book starts out slow since Mr. Hackman is bringing you up to speed. After that, moves quickly. Like the detail in his books. Will buy the next one.

I had a little trouble getting into it but it was worth it. The more I read, the harder it was to put down. Think you'll enjoy it.
