William H. McNeill, Robert A. Milikan Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Chicago, is a past president of the American Historical Association. He is the author of many books, most recently The Human Web: A Bird's-eye View of World History, written with his son, historian J. R. McNeill.
