Helen sparkles in A Night in Kansas City, October 31, 2005

had the joy of listening to Helen play in the intimate surroundings of the Folly Theater in downtown Kansas City a couple nights ago, with the Steve Turre quarter, and she sparkled. Accompanied very artfully, with nice fills and texture, and really took off when she had the lead. Played a wide variety of styles as the quartet danced around the jazz map, and she raised the hair on the back of my neck with a number of dazzling solos, and yet was just as effective when playing soft and subtle. A marvelous technician and plays with a real fire and energy. Can't wait to hear more, and will surely make it a point to hear her when she comes to town again. her CD is every bit as enjoyable (except you can't see her face light up :D )
