About the Author

Bill Henderson is the founder and editor of the Pushcart Prize. He received the 2006 National Book Critic Circle’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Poets & Writers / Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award. He is also the author of several memoirs, including All My Dogs: A Life. The founder of the Lead Pencil Club, Henderson lives in New York.

This annual collection of stories, poems, essays, and memoirs selected from small presses, mostly in the United States but inviting nominations from small independent publishers worldwide, is over five hundred pages of some of the best creative writing in print, excluding the novel. This edition, Pushcart Prize 2000, XXIV, carries on that tradition. Variety and diversity make for surprises. Subject matter and style are wide open. The only constant is good writing, which can be as diverse as imagination, perception, and setting. I personally have an interest in short stories, and in my opinion, what appears in the Pushcart is cutting-edge fiction _ not what's established, but what's coming.
