Book Description

1996 0889612188 978-0889612181 1st
Pushing the Limits is a path-breaking multi-media anthology of fiction, personal narrative, poetry, song, and artwork by disabled dykes. Taking cultural space for their language and art, Anne-Marie Alonzo, Sherree Clark, Laura Hershey, Audre Lorde, Mary Frances Platt, Sherry Shute, Shahnaz Stri, Frances Yip Hoi, and others, challenge exclusionary notions about who counts as a dyke, and subvert pervasive stereotypes about disabled people. In doing so, these writers and artists enrich queer communities, and contribute to the efforts of anti-ablest and other disability activists.

Finally, an autonomous, self-contained collection of cultural work by disabled dykes, Pushing the Limits is compelling, provocative, and affirming.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Addressing the power and importance of language, graphically illustrating the misuse of power, corruption and convenience that governs the medical profession, and questioning the passive disinterest of our non-disabled sisters, Pushing the Limits is both painful and celebratory. Far from a rant about the inevitable oppression of living with societal "norms" and institutionalised "isms", this anthology is sensitive, intelligent and questioning. Each disabled dyke in her own unique way has contributed to that developing phenomenon that we know is disabled dyke culture.

This book is an excellent read for poetry and autobiographical works about sexuality, disability, and the interactions between the two. Really a must read for people investigating experiences about womanhood, ability, queer sexuality, family, women of color, classism, and much more. Very reflective and intense but well-written and enjoyable.

This review is from: Pushing the Limits: Disabled Dykes Produce Culture (Paperback)
As someone who is not disabled, I found this book to be very education and informative. It gave me a taste for what differently abled dykes experience and how they view and are perceived in the world. I was especially moved by the poem by Dragonsani Renteria titled, "Rejection". This book is a must read!
