Book Description

May 17, 2002
Pushing the 'Pull' Door or Stop the Carnival is based on the true-life story of its author and her husband retiring to an island in the Caribbean and starting new careers in the education system . . . one in a public high school and one in a private prep school. It tells of principals and assistants, other teachers, and students . . . the effect of hurricanes and the establishment of a 'job bank.' It shows just what the students learned in class, what teachers put up with, and how the school passed 'accreditation.' It covers the hardships, illnesses, and the mountains people had to climb . . . and their shortcomings and joys.At the end, the 'addendum' covers suggestions that could end some of the ills and stop the 'carnival' of un-understandable events. It is hoped that this satire will awaken many of the offenders so that the pleasure of teaching will eventually overcome the frustrations. It is a challenge to new teachers to make a difference.

About the Author

G. Dayhoff Addley has been writing books since the age of 16 and has had several articles with pictures published. While teaching in St. Croix, she realized she would have to write down the daily humorous happenings on 3' x 5' cards in order to survive. When Ms. Addley retired after ten years, she sorted the cards chronologically and wrote them out. Too many situations escaped those cards, but any reader can see the overall picture, and those who have read my book (who are still in St. Croix) agree that 'That's the way it was and still is.' Teachers, parents and high school students everywhere will respond with feeling that 'That's the way it is everywhere!'

5.0 out of 5 stars No Child Left Behind, May 6, 2003
This review is from: Pushing the "Pull" Door (Paperback)
Any politician--be it at the local, state or federal level-- who truly cares about "No Child Left Behind" should read this book. This would help them better understand the level of frustration endured by any and all educators. Anyone involved in education would benefit from the insight the author provides and would have a broader perspective in which to base any debate on funding our educational system. A great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Reading!, February 14, 2003
This review is from: Pushing the "Pull" Door (Paperback)
'Pushing the "Pull" Door' is fascinating reading! It gives one a true appreciation of the remarkable dedication, incredible patience and professional (and personal) stamina required to be a true teacher.

Of special interest is the chapter on Articulating, which demonstrates g. dayhoff addley's keen devotion to her task of preparing young people to be self-sufficient and profit from every aspect of their education. She convinces you that teaching is a vocation and her tenacity as an educator is remarkable.
