Editorial Reviews

Composer Henry Jackman is best known for his movie scores for The Dark Knight and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man s Chest. For the Puss in Boots score, Jackman utilizes folk instruments from traditional Latin music. Inspired by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, Jackman blends guitars and Latin percussion with an orchestral sound influenced by Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. The album includes two tracks from Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. A fixture on the world music circuit, they are known for their nimble-fingered guitar work and diverse background.

4.0 out of 5 stars The cat that takes the cream October 28, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
Given the worldwide success of the Shrek franchise, it was only a matter of time before we started seeing spinoffs, and so it comes as no surprise that the fall of 2011 sees the release of Puss in Boots. The feline lover-and-fighter quickly became an enormously popularly character following his initial appearance in Shrek 2, with his swashbuckling ways, his flirtatious voice (provided by Antonio Banderas), and his secret weapon - big, adorable eyes which turn grown men to jelly - and this new movie focuses solely on him. Directed by Chris Miller, the film again features Banderas as the leading voice, and is a prequel of sorts, telling the story of the events leading up to Puss's introduction to Shrek and Donkey, from Puss's point of view. The cast features the voices of Salma Hayek as Puss's paramour Kitty Softpaws, Zach Galifianakis as Humpty Dumpty, Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris as Jack and Jill, and even Guillermo Del Toro as the mysterious Moustache Man.

Taking over from Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell on musical duties is another of Hans Zimmer's Remote Control alumni, English composer Henry Jackman, who has already attracted a great deal of positive attention for himself following his generally very good work on the likes of Monsters vs. Aliens, Gulliver's Travels, and two other scores from earlier this year, X-Men First Class and the new Winnie the Pooh movie. As good as those scores were, Puss in Boots is clearly his best work to date. Taking his cues from several film music contemporaries as well classical composers Manuel de Falla and Maurice Ravel (whose Bolero is probably the epitome of Spanish classical music), Jackman's score is a wonderfully entertaining, high energy action-adventure score, topped with an appropriately healthy dose of Latin fire.

The soundtrack of Puss In Boots is quite a mix of Zorro, Western films like The Good The Bad And The Ugly and a kid-friendly film. And this mix works very well, considering that Antonio Banderas played Zorro in two movies (albeit the films are not my favourite incarnation of Johnston McCulley's swashbuckling hero, but that's another story) and once again reprises his role as Puss In Boots, the swordfighting lovable cat from Shrek 2. (My favourite bit from Shrek 2 is when he's fighting the guards during the film's climax-shame it was too brief). Once you hear the first track, you have a pretty good idea of what Mr. Jackman has in store for you. If you loved the movie, I think you'll fall in love with the score as well. "What can I say? I was a bad kitty." The ending of the film just screams, "SEQUEL." And I sure hope there IS one...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Match! March 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you've loved the movie as much as I did, which is to a feverish pitch, you'll definitely love this soundtrack. This is a lively and exciting collection, and it is a tantalizing way to relive the very memorable grand adventure of Puss in his first solo movie. If you haven't seen the movie, and opt to buy this soundtrack first, it would still make a fine addition to any music or movie soundtrack enthusiast's collection. The music of Puss in Boots is very distinct and it portrays Puss's personality and his story perfectly! in every riff and beat; without at all sounding mundane or nondescript, as most orchestra-centric soundtracks these days tend to sound. The upbeat dance tracks are especially delightful, and they compliment the other tracks which go from suspenseful, to heart-wrenching, to slow and pleasantly ambient, even almost lulling, but still, never losing its' personality and stays engaging, passionate, fun-filled & endearing, and is really an overall "feel good" experience, just as the movie is, from start to finish. I guess the only thing that left me wanting is that the catchy song towards the end of the movie that segued to the end credits is not included here, and I was really looking forward to having that song too, as it is part of the Puss in Boots soundtrack after all. Still, it's a very good buy, and a must-have for all Puss in Boots lovers out there!

The Soundtrack Of Puss In Boots includes 24 tracks, composed by Henry Pryce Jackman, featuring Rodrigo Y Gabriela. Excluding the song at the end of the movie at the beginning of the end credits, which is entitled "Americano" by Lady Gaga.

I'll admit it, I winced and cringed when I heard Dreamworks was doing a Puss In Boots spin-off. The word "really?" was in my head every time I saw a trailer or a poster. Then I was invited to a screening of the film, and I was incredibly impressed. No joke. I really enjoyed the movie. I love Antonio Banderas and I love Henry Jackman, and I guess they played to my good side. The movie was an awesome fairytale western. The jokes were funny and on point and it even had a great amount of character. The story exists completely outside of the Shrek universe and that's a strong point. The music is also great as well. Henry Jackman shows his versatility by tacking a hispanic themed score.

The music is full of great character riffs and has tons of character of its own. It plays homage to Ennio Morricone now and then. While I was expecting Harry Gregson-Williams to be onboard I think it stays with the idea of keeping this story completely removed from the world of Shrek. Jackman's tunes are fun and quirky and have tons of energy. The now incredibly popular Rodrigo y Gabriela lend their guitar talents to the score and two songs of theirs are used in the film as well. I must mention that the songs are not original and are from their first studio album. They do add a good deal of flair to the musical soundscape though just as they did for Knight & Day and Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. There is also lots of score included on this release. The running time of the CD is 65-minutes, and when you consider the film is a brisk 90-minutes that is a lot of score we have. The whole experience is just great. Henry Jackman is really growing into his own and with X-Men: First Class under his belt we know he can tackle big studio tentpoles.

Puss In Boots was a nice treat.
