James Reed is the Chairman of REED, the recruitment specialists. I found this book to be rather unhelpful. Many of the suggestions simply are not realistic, although they sound good in a book. For example, in the networking chapter, the author suggests that you select 20 people and "every week you send each of your twenty a note with a helpful thoughtful link, idea, quote, or suggestion." Good luck every week spending time trying to find links, ideas, etc, to spam 20 people. Sounds good but come on, really?

Another "tip" is to use their paid service called CMe to replace your typical resume. CMe says things like "Joe Smith's 3G Panorama Profile showed that his strength is resilience." The idea is that employers care about mindset. Sorry authors, employers don't know what the 3G Panorama Profile is nor will they take the time to research CMe. They will likely just think it is weird and wonder where your resume is. But thanks for trying to use me to advertise your product to employers.

There's some helpful stuff in the book, but most feels like it was thrown in as filler.

This book reminds us that to succeed we really need to focus on developing our Mindset. While skills matter and is required in our jobs or career, our mindset differentiates us. The right mindset will put us on the track to success in our work and personal life.

Based on their research, the authors define the 3G Mindset as the ideal winning mindset. The three "Gs" stand for Global Mindset, Good Mindset and Grit Mindset. The book also provides the 3G Panaroma instrument for us to gauge our 3Gmindset as a first step for our improvement. The rest of the chapters book discusses (1) Understand and discover what we mean by the ideal winning mindset (2) Gauge our mindset using the 3G Panaroma instrument (3) Strengthen our mindset, (4) Apply the best of our mindset to get, advance and succeed in our career.

While 3G Mindset is not a magic pill as mentioned by the author, it does highlights and provides useful and practical insights as to why some people always seems to do well and accelerate in their career. Knowing and reminding yourself of these insights will enhance your chance of promotion and earning potential. So, multiply your chances to succeed with this book!

There are 2 things which are great about this book: the whole idea of developing a broader mindset and the part where you learn how to create a better looking CV (describe how you put changes in practice).
Everything else consists about how you must become a super employe by developing extreme skills for the benefit of your boss. You must show plenty of effort, be global, be good, have grit, have the brain of the genuis and so on and on.
Lots of examples in the book surprised me by their dullness -- like the story about a guy who was late with his application for a sales position. Instead of finding another vacancy with the application window stil open the guy decides to find his way to the executive by terrorising her stuff and lying his way forward. Surprisingly the executive accepts the application and grants an interview.
I expected a lot more from the 9 chapters of this book.

P.S. And the London cab driver's spatial memory phenomen example never grows old, it's in this book too, like in so many others before it.

Maybe I just read the book too quickly, but I found the intellectual heft of this book to be somewhat daunting. There is so much ground work involved in developing the motivation to comprehend what a "3G" mindset consists of. I advise you to read one chapter a week or so and ponder what it means to develop each of the three "G's" ( Global, Good and Grit) to you. It may sound simplistic, but there are layers and layers of concepts in improving these core values that you may never have thought about. If you don't have the energy to delve that deep at this time, perhaps it would behoove you to spend time with this book only on your days off!

That being said, I'm a junkie for testing and analysis. The online resources provided by purchasing this book alone are worth the price of admission. I love seeing my numbers crunched and seeing how I score in comparison to other mined data. I'm a nerd--but I'm exhausted by the breadth of the text itself. Another time perhaps!

This book provided in depth explanations of the 3G principles. Plenty of tools were supplied on the website and in the book. The knowledge in this book can be directly and instantly applied to your career.

Authors, Paul Stoltz and James Reed, do an excellent job of explaining their ideas about mindset over skill sets. It contained some great ideas about how to use your mindset to improve your current role at work or how to gain employment. It was an easy read and I enjoyed it very much. Now, to put it to use.

I bought this book expecting insights into transitioning from a very lucrative but unsatisfying job to one much more attuned to my, to use the authors' word, "mindset." What I found instead were a lot of platitudes and obvious prescriptions backed up with marginally useful examples riddled with inconsistencies and contradictions. Relying on self scoring tests the authors reward those with inflated self perceptions. Additionally,the authors' tests place an over-reliance on "always" and "never" suppositions and score the results such that those who see the world in "black and white" are scored higher than those perceiving a world of gradations.
I was equally disappointed in the advice on resumes and how to position yourself via "CMe." I found their advice and solutions to be consistently contradictory and finished with the realization that most suggestions they made that succeeded were because it was an exception rather than being a rule.
The ONE insight that did survive all the contradictions was the (trendy) recognition of the value of the behavioural traits of resilience and perseverence. In the end I believe they could have simply written, "Your mindset should be to be persistent and resilient (even if you have to occasionally lie to yourself and others)and you will succeed." and saved us all $17 and 250 pages.
