Awesome Sophmore Album,
By Mark (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Put Yourself in My Shoes (Audio CD)
After the successful "Killin' Time" album, Clint continues with another equally awesome album. Although this album has more songs that are less "radio friendly" than his debut album, they are actually better songs over all. Songs like "Muddy Water", "The Old Man", "The Gulf Of Mexico" and "The Good-Night Loving" are actually better than anything Clint has put out on radio in the last 5 years. You won't hear these songs on the radio but they are perfect country songs. The album has produced two number one hits: "Where Are You Now" and "Loving Blind". The latter has some of the best fiddle (violin) arrangements ever put into a country album. The title cut, "Put Yourself In My Shoes" was a top ten favorite and is Clint's best known "Harmonica" song. This CD is played much more often than anything he has put out recently so if you want a good Clint Black CD, get this, "Killin' Time" or "The Hard Way". Or better yet, get all three.

I've just ordered this CD after years of listening to the cassette. It is my favorite CD by Clint, the songs seem to flow from one right into the next. Be that as it may, I would buy this CD for the pure pleasure of listening to two of its tracks over and over, The Old Man, and The Goodnight-Loving Trail. When a song can again give me goosebumps after hearing it hundreds of times, it is for real. Wonderful CD to listen to while driving the back roads.

My entry point into country music,
By
This review is from: Put Yourself in My Shoes (Audio CD)
This is the album that introduced me to country music. A buddy of mine in the Navy insisted I give it a try. The stories Clint Black tells are exceptional. The word play in "One More Payment" is instantly accessible. I thought for years that the "hit song" on the album was "A Heart Like Mine." That song defined country music for me for almost a decade. Since my initial exposure I've gone on to enjoy more a bluegrass flavor (a la Dwight Yoakum) but I still return to this stunning album several times a year. It has stood the test of time, and is a true classic. If you're looking for an entry point into country music, this would be the album for you. Enjoy the word play, story telling, and musical virtuosity on display when you "put yourself in my shoes."

Greatest of Them all,
This review is from: Put Yourself in My Shoes (Audio CD)
I think if there is anyone that knows about country music at all, they will tell you that Clint Black is by far the best country singer of all times in this era. The country music of today has lost all of its meaning, as hard as it may sound, todays country music sounds like Roll & Roll as well as some carvial music. There are stories to be told in country music, there is love stories that are talked about country songs, there is real life facts of life in country songs, and Clint Black has kept that tradition going right on in his music, all of this other wild so-called country music needs to go back to the drawing board and start over, Start out by talking to the Forefathers of the country music, like George Jones, Conway, Mel Tillis, and so on. However Clint can even give one a few lessons about great country music, I know what I am speaking of I've been listening to country music every since I was 4-years olds. Keep up the good work Clint Black.

Vintage and fabulous Clint Black,

There's hardly a better song than "Put Yourself in My Shoes" to show off Clint Black's great vocals and harmonica playing. Then add "One More Payment" for great lyrics and "This Nightlife" for an upbeat driving song.

Good on It's Own,

Clint Black's second CD is pretty good on it's own merits, but pales in comparison to his debut. The title song is terrific, and "Gulf of Mexico" is a beautiful ballad. Also on the plus side is the great traditional country sound - it's not the kind of boring, easy listening stuff that many country stars are recording today. However, most of the songs simply don't stand out in the same way as the hits on his debut CD did. Overall, a good country CD that will likely satisfy fans of Clint Black and more traditional country music.

Decent, But Disappointing Follow Up,

This is a good album, but is definitley the least involving Clint Black album. There is no awful track here, but there is also no huge standout song either.
