Editorial Reviews

Most likely his best album, ever! Along with the late Bobby King, Terry was the lead singer in Ry Cooder's band for many years. The recording is state-of-the art, the music is full of crazy grooves, and his cover of Lenoir's 'Mississippi Blues' is worth the money alone for this CD. TERRY EVANS - voc/acoustic gtr, RY COODER - gtr, KEN SCANDLYN - gtr/hca, JESSE SAMSEL - gtr, JORGE CALDERON - bass, JIM KELTNER drums, etc.

Until five years ago, I wasn't much of a Blues fan, but after listening to Terry Evans' album, 'Blues for Thought,' I become a fan of him and Blues. That album caused me to start looking for anything with Terry Evans. 'Puttin' It Down' was the second album I purchased and found it to be as enjoyable as 'Blues for Thought.' In the car, I sing along and if at home, I start moving/dancing, while Terry Evans sings. Now I own 'Come to the River' and am waiting for ... to send me 'Mississippi Magic.' I think all of his music just makes you happy.

This CD was recorded in July 1995 in Hollywood California and is somewhat unique today in that it is a pure analog recording. All tracks, with the possible exception of 3, were recorded direct to two track for that live club feeling. All tracks feature Ry Cooder on guitar and most feature Jim Keltner on drums.
The disc itself has a laidback soulful feel which seems typical for slide master Ry Cooder. The standout tracks are J.B. Lenoir's "Down In Mississippi" and Terry's own "Blues No More" both slow, smooth, soulful and performed with a lot of feeling. On the downside, the CD would get along just fine without "Money In Your Pocket" which sounds an awful lot like the old "Put The Lime In The Coconut". Over all, with the exception of "Money", this is a fine CD with a lot to offer the listener.

I wonder why I have never heard of Terry Evans before. This is gooooood music. The music has life, power, and soul. The recording is also excellent.

A long-time fan of Ry Cooder, Bobby King, Terry Evans and Flaco Jimanez (from back in the days I used to see them all live at the Amazing Grace Coffeehouse in Evanston), I am THRILLED to discover these new recordings I never knew about! Yippee!!

If you have been a Ry Cooder fan for any length of time, then Terry Evans will be a familiar name to you. Evans sang with Cooder's band for many years and has since recorded several solo albums, including this fine set from 1995. Cooder shows up to play guitar on all but two of the album's tracks, plus his son Joachim sits in on percussion and studio vets Jorge Calderon and Jim Keltner are also part of the band. As you would expect, this unit cooks!

For this album Evans mixes originals (written alone or with others) along with pleasing covers of classics such as "Money in Your Pocket" and "Down In Mississippi." But the real ear-grabber is the album's closing tune, an 8-minute Evans original titled "Blues No More." This song is both a showcase for Cooder's deft guitar playing and Evans' passionate vocals. A great combination!

Several other reviewers have raved about this album and the great blues to be found. I won't disagree with that, but I don't think this CD will appeal only to blues lovers. It's a nice mix of R&B styles; soul and blues and a bit of a retro rock vibe too. For fans of Ry Cooder, I think this Terry Evans CD will prove to be a very enjoyable listening experience.
