5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I used to own 3 CD stores and ran a recording studio and a sound company. I've listened to just about everything. I guess I just got burned out on the same ole stuff - the same recycled riffs, recyled bands, etc. When I heard this disc, it blew me away. I've tried to track down the artists on the disc and buy their cds, too. But, most of these groups don't have any...

3.0 out of 5 stars So-So Salsa
"Afro-Latino" is a so-so salsa compilation from Putumayo. It's a decade old, but hasn't aged quite so well. There are highlights from Tam Tam 2000 and the 4 Etoiles. The songs do have a savory rhythm, but as noted before, it does get repetitive.

When it comes to Afro-Latino music, I'd recommend the late Andy Palacio and the Garifuna Collective, as well as the...

I guess I just got burned out on the same ole stuff - the same recycled riffs, recyled bands, etc. When I heard this disc, it blew me away. I've tried to track down the artists on the disc and buy their cds, too. But, most of these groups don't have any releases you can buy in the states - just a couple do. Not only are the artists great. Whoever put this compilation together deserves a lot of the credit. Probably the same person who compiled Samba Bosa Nova, another Putumayo masterpiece. It's a keeper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Feel the Rhythms in Afro-Latino music, July 24, 2000

Welcome to the sensational music of Putamayo Artists. This album is a wonderful introduction to Afro-Cuban sounds. Combinations of 'Cubanesque' rhythms and African folk rhythms create a irresistable sound that, as the CD claims, is "Guaranteed to make you feel good!" I used to live in Miami and this music reminds me of the Cuban passion for good music. If you are not familiar with this sound, this album would make a wonderful initiation into the world of 'musica Latina'. This CD includes a booklet which explains how Cuban sounds are introduced into African culture. It also details each artist featured, which instruments played (some you've never heard), and the background of the story being told. Be prepared to get up and dance!

If you have an ear for this genre of music, or if you are looking to get a taste, this is by far one of the most lively, fun and fantastic CDs you could get your hands on. The first song will capture your tapping feet and the guitar on Mujer Magica will mesmerize your senses. This is a must have CD.

I dare anyone to sit still while listening to this CD. I purchased it two months ago and a day has not gone by when I haven't listened to it. The musical/historcal notes which accompany the CD give you a better appreciation of the music and the lands from which the songs originate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, September 28, 1998

Music that belongs to all of us. Latin American (especially Caribbean) music has been heavily influenced by African rhythms, and contemporary African musicians have been influenced by Latin American music. It's all here, and it's a delight to listen to. And dance!

5.0 out of 5 stars West Africa and Cuba join forces, November 28, 2005
By
This review is from: Putumayo Presents Afro-Latino (Audio CD)
This CD should have been named Afro-Cubano. The CD starts off with African salsa and son, and then switches back and forth between Cuban son and African son.
Then just when you think you figured the CD out Ruy Mingas's Kolonial throws you off with a very percussive afroportuguese dish. The rhythm here is strong and different from the clave influence heard in the rest of the CD.
One strange thing about this CD is that the Cuban selections are all traditional son, while the african cuts stand out as more progressive and elaborate, with incredible use of electric guitars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Afro-Latino roots at it's best, July 22, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Putumayo Presents Afro-Latino (Audio CD)
Well folks this is where it started, the true roots of the Cuban Rhythms and the rest of the Caribbean sounds. Here you will see the close connection to what today it's known as "salsa"; on some songs you think you are listening to Spanish but in reality it's Portuguese Creole from Cape Verde. The rest of the songs are a mixture of African, Spanish, Peruvian, Cuban and Portuguese rhythms. My favorite songs are from Angola, Rudy Mingas " KOLONAL " and Ricardo Lemo & Makina Loca from the Congo "Mambo Yo Yo ", all the rest are good too. On this CD the African continent proves to the rest of the world that salsa originated from them and they can play it just as good!

This CD has a lot of various Afro-Cuban cuts. Some have a faster beat for dancing and others are more suave. Definitely music that will make you warm when you feel the beat.
