5.0 out of 5 stars Every song is nice, December 29, 2005

This review is from: Putumayo Presents: American Folk (Audio CD)
So often we buy a CD because one or two of the songs capture us, but then find that we play the CD less and less because other songs on the CD don't appeal to us. This has not been the case with this CD. Every song is pleasant to listen to, and overall the CD is a relaxing dip into the world of folk.

I am hoping to add my voice to those encouraging you to buy this cd, and also providing a review to counteract that of the guy below who gave this only 1 star, and then wrote how he liked it! :o)

Seriously, the songs on this album all are different in their own ways, yet work together to form not only a good compilation of individual songs, but a strong album in its own right. If you're like me, you'll find yourself easily listening to the whole thing straight through, not simply picking out random songs here and there. There are some well known artists, such as Patti Griffin and Natalie Merchant, and several lesser known who were a joy to discover.

I smile when I hear "Shirt," a catchy little number I danced with our newborn the first weeks after he came home from the hospital. "Boots of Spanish Leather" is a great cover of the Bob Dylan classic. "She Don't Like Roses" is a more somber number, but a good one. And "Jubilee" is another one good for dancing!

Give this one a try. In addition to some great music, maybe you'll in turn discover one of the premier "world music" labels out there, Putumayo, which has some great compilations of foreign music, but also has enough sense to mine the rich musical landscape of the United States, with this and several other compilations of regional American music among their world catalog.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Smooth Ride in Contemporary Folk, April 8, 2006

I ran into Putumayo Presents: American Folk while browsing through a CD kiosk; ever since I put those hulky headphones to preview it I've been hooked. With its smooth transitions, the variation of folk artists provides an album which can easily be taken in as a whole. Pick up the CD with the intention to throw it in your computer or player and let the music soak in--take it easy. I really can't say you should preview every artist and decide if you want to grab it or not; it seems its intentions aren't promoting folk artists, but just giving the listener a good time.

This is feel-good music at its best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smooth and calming, November 29, 2005

This is a pretty good cd, with some songs standing out more than others (as always). My only beef with it is the lack of lyrics in the liner notes; on the upside the bios in the liner notes were interesting. All in all, if you like modern folk, you should like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars well done!, December 26, 2010

This review is from: Putumayo Presents: American Folk (Audio CD)
a nice collection of songs... it gave me some artist names to type into pandora.com I don't think you can go wrong with this purchase. It's a slow Sunday morning with a cup of coffee on the couch album. I've listened to the album through a pair of Headroom amped 701 AKGs and it is well mastered - the instruments are well placed and it has good depth. "Pale Moon" always hooks me and the slide guitar on "Don't Look For Me" is simply smooth. And, like the best folk lyrics - their excellent. I'm especially fond of the female vocalist songs... "Pour" is simply exquisite. Just get it... you're just looking for an excuse. If these reviews are wrong, donated it to your local library and make a crunchy person smile. I'm loosing focus listening to track six so enjoy the album and review it after a couple of listens.

I heard this compilation a few times and had to get a copy for myself. It's a perfect blend of music, good for all occasions and the songs flow seamlessly. I discovered a number of artists I may otherwise never have heard. Love, love, love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic Soul Music for the Open-Hearted, December 27, 2009

American folk at its best a-la-Bob Dylan, and by that I mean the lyrical compositions - absolutely gets you right in the heart with those sharp arrows of beauty, grace, and wonderment. And then the beautiful musical compositions take those gorgeous lyrics and just slap you silly. These are the types of songs that fill your heart with grace and wonderment when you hear them replayed over the years. Really and seriously folks, get this album while you can since I believe it has been discontinued - you absolutely will not regret it.

There are all types of music in our world - some to dance by, some to party by, some to romance by. Well, this is music upon which to reflect and by which to cry tears of pain and joy and whose child is hope. Call it acoustic soul music, and it will certainly win and cheer your heart. The sirens of Homer's Odyssey may have resorted to using some of these gals to ensnare those poor passing sailors....and for this I cannot pity those men....

5.0 out of 5 stars best compilation CD known to mankind., December 8, 2009

Someone gave me this as a gift a few years ago, and I wasn't familiar with many of the artists. But I fell in love with almost every song on this CD and still listen to it regularly. It's good background music for making dinner, and relaxing (so I guess it's pretty versatile). If you like folk music, this is the CD for you!

This review is from: Putumayo Presents: American Folk (Audio CD)
Putumayo in general, puts out an incredible album. Every last song on here is record quality. I rented the album from the library and followed it with each album from every artist. It makes me comfortable, and in tune with America. I loved it, and highly recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album!!!, May 30, 2007
This review is from: Putumayo Presents: American Folk (Audio CD)
I am a true neo-soul, R&B type of music fan...I never would have thought that I would love this CD so much. We started to play it during nap time at the child care facility where I work, and it just grew on me. I really never listened to folk, but I appreciate good muscianship and REAL musical talent. This CD is great when you need to tone things down and chill out. The songs tell beautiful stories and is well worth a try.
