You will listen again and again,
This review is from: Putumayo Presents: Celtic Tides (Audio CD)
Putumayo is doing a very good job bringing world music to new audiences. The 1998 release, Celtic Tides: A musical Odyssey, is a companion CD to a video (also worth having) but stands splendidly on its own. Some of my very favorite Celtic artists, such as Altan, Capercaillie and Clannad appear on this album, but almost every track is worthy. One of the pleasures of this CD is the representation from so many of the countries that produce Celtic music--Ireland, Scotland, Canada's Cape Breton and the United States. I don't recall anything from the Brittany region of France, but no one record can include everything. This is a good CD if you want an introduction to Celtic music. It's also a good one to have in a place where you can't keep your whole collection. Thus, for me, this is one that I keep at the office where disc space is limited. This CD is Beautiful and a pleasure to hear--over and over again.

Celtic Tides: A Musical Odyssey,
By Theresa Bell (Albany, Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Putumayo Presents: Celtic Tides (Audio CD)
I have just recently discovered Celtic music and think this album is one of the best introductions one could have into the genre. A am already building a collection of the various artists I heard. I am amazed at the beautiful voices of the artists as well as the blend of traditional and modern instrumentation. Dougie MacLean's selections may be a bit sentimental, but I have always been a sap for a fine voice. Mary Jane Lamond really reaches me with E Horo, and I don't even have a clue what she is singing about. It has inspired me to try to learn Gaelic. Bravo to all the artists for giving bored listeners an alternative to the meaningless thumping and screaming of popular rock and roll. I may be growing poor with all my new purchases of Celtic music, but I will surely suffer happily.

A Perfect Compilation!!!,

When i was at the record store I previewed this one and Gaelic Storm by Gaelic Storm. Well this one went home with me. A huge fan of the Chieftans my collection of Celtic music was severly lacking. Adding this was the perfect move. It provides me with a mix of music without having to get up to change Cd's. listen to the Samples they show it all. Try Dougie Maclean's "Feel So Near" or Solas "Maid on the Shore" I doubt you will be disappointed

I loved the album for the songs represented what the Celtic heritage is all about. I strongly recommend this album for its sweet rhythm and rich lyrics. Well done!

Could have been better,

I find this compilation somewhat disappointing. Many of the songs here are bland or boring, and few of them stay on the mind, even after listening to them several times. The big exception is Dougie McLean's "Caledonia": sure, it's a bit sentimental and shamelessly nationalistic, but it's a great song anyway. McLean's other cut here "Feel son Near", Clannad's folky "An Gabhar Bán" and Altan's instrumental "An Grianán/Horse with a Heart" are good songs as well. As to the other songs, well, it's not that they are bad (though the awful rap "Sleepy Maggie" is), it's just that they fail to make an impression, even after listening to them several times. I have several Celtic music CDs, and they are all far better than this (even if they all include Pogues "Fairytale of New York"; thankfully this CD didn't).

This is a great cd! I really love the collection of Celtic songs that Putumayo has gathered. This is music that will transport you to other places, all somewhere in the Celtic world. "An Gabhar Ban" is a particuarly lively song, as is "The Birkin Tree," but all of the songs are pure treasures that you will want to replay many, many times. Celtic Tides is definately worth both your time and money.

The main reason I got this CD was that is has my favorite song "Caledonia" on it. It sounds beautiful. I also like "Feel So Near" and "E Horo".

Like most Putamayo collections, this is a good one. The artists included come from Ireland, Scotland, USA, and Canada and include some well known names including Clannad and the Chieftains. No artists from Galicia in Spain though and there are many fine artists to choose from there who are in this style. Like most other Putamayo CD's , the length here is only so-so- this one clocks in at 53 minutes , which is high for a Putamyao CD. If you go with a Rough Guide CD, you'll get a lot more songs and length. What is here is good Celtic music from a nice mix of artists, though.

Real Celtic Music by Top Musicians,

It's worth the price, just to hear Mary Black sing "Both Sides the Tweed"! Actually there's not one song by the numerous artists that I would give up. It's a great collection and the list of performers sounds like a Who's Who of celtic music (Altan, Capercaillie, Seamus Egan, Dougie MacLean, Clannad, The Chieftans, The Rankin Family, etc.)
I've not seen the video documentary that this comes from. Obviously I've missed a stellar session. A nifty, informative booklet accompanies the CD. Highly recommended.
