Product Description

Editorial Review

Tetris fans will be instantly pleased with this comparable puzzle game for the NEOGEO Pocket Color. Instead of the familiar blocks found in Tetris, PuyoPop features colored, bouncy globules (known as Puyos) that advance down from above. Your goal is to match four Puyos of the same color by rotating them and letting them stack onto each other so that they are touching--horizontally, vertically, or both ways. When you match four Puyos, they pop--thus the name PuyoPop. A match will force nasty little blockers (known as OJAMAs) to fall from above onto your opponent's field. The OJAMAs create dead space between the Puyos. OJAMAs can ultimately form a critical block that prevents your opponent from achieving more Puyo matches.

Single-player mode pits players against an artificial opponent, while two-player mode requires the use of a link cable, another NEOGEO system, and (of course) another human opponent.

Like many Japanese-created games for the emerging NEOGEO system, PuyoPop manages to retain its local flavor, translating only the onscreen text while preserving the adorable vocal sound snippets. The two definitive words for this game: addictive and cute. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Cute graphics and sound
  • Easy to understand, hard to put down
Cons:
  • Some of the later levels are near impossible

4.0 out of 5 stars Do you like puzzle games? :) I think I'm in heaven!, November 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Puyo Pop (Video Game)
This is a really awesome puzzle game! I LOVE it! Ever play 'Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine' for the Sega Genesis or Game Gear? This plays the same way, you match the little color blobs and they disappear (not as easy as it sounds)! Way cooler though; there's this little critter that watches you play and he dances and stuff (even cuter than Pokemon's Pikachu!), and this game has plenty of that 'Japanese game feeling' that has sort of a cult following. ;) Like when you score points or cause a chain effect (complete a set of puzzle pieces causing them to disappear, making another set fall together and disappear, etc.) a little voice (the creature's?) says things in Japanese! Cute! And the computer opponents are cute and funny :) Buy this game, you'll see what I mean, it's really cool :) If you like cute stuff and/or puzzle games, this one's a real find :)

4.0 out of 5 stars I love Puyo!, December 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Puyo Pop (Video Game)
A salesperson(thank you, whoever you are) introduced Puyo Puyo(the Megadrive/Genesis version) to my friend. And, my friend showed it to me. Now, it's my turn to pass the torch to the next person.

In case you have never heard of Puyo Puyo, it was developed by Compile(a Japanese game company) Later, Sega changed the original characters in Puyo Puyo and published the game under the name 'Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine' in America. It was also released for the SNES and other systems as well. However, the Neo Geo Pocket version marks the first time in the states that all the original(not to mention adorable) characters are included. In my opinion, the NGPC version is probably the best version besides the Dreamcast version(of course)

So, what's so cool about Puyo Pop? First, it has tons of options to choose from. Second, there are easy, normal, and hard modes to play with, each has a different objective to complete. Finally, anyone who knows Puyo Puyo understands the real charm lies in the two-player battle mode. There nothing more gratifiying than watching the facial expressions of your friend(or soon-to-be former friend) after you pull a 5-chains-combo on him/her. I can go on for pages telling you how great this game is, but, I think it's best for you and your friends to play it without knowing what to expect.

P.S. Must try the link mode, ok!
