A fresh, lively, and savvy survey of humanity's eternal query: Who or what is God? Vardy examines ancient and modern notions of what it means to talk about "God" ("one of the most fought-over and debated words in the history of ideas"), eternal life, omnipotence, prayer, and more. "An accomplished guide round the battlefield of ideas about God".--Don Cupitt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Philosophy of Religion Overview, December 13, 2007
This review is from: Puzzle of God (Paperback)
This is the perfect book to start with when studying philosophy of religion. Vardy covers all the main topics and does an excellent job of showing how they interrelate. His writing is clear, concise, and entertaining. Chapter review questions and suggestions for further reading make this text especially suitable for study or for use in a book club. (The questions are so engaging that I couldn't help but journal my answers.)

The most enjoyable book I've read in a long time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction, July 19, 2000
By
John DePoe (Iowa City, Iowa USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Puzzle of God (Paperback)
This book offers a good introductory overview of different ways people have tried to approach God. One of the best things about the book are the review questions for each chapter, which reinforces the ideas in each chapter. The book is intended to be for those who have very little or no experience in philosophy. He takes time to explain the jargon for those who may not know it. The conclusions he draws aren't exactly the same ones I would draw, but this book serves as an introduction to the subject of trying to know God (and how we can know Him). This isn't my first choice for a book on this subject, but its better than alot of others people pick up instead.
