4.0 out of 5 stars The first six issues of a great comic, March 6, 2004
This review is from: PvP: The Dork Ages (Paperback)
Scott Kurtz's wildly funny PVP is the best of the current crop of webtoons, those comic strips that never would have found distribution in a newspaper but thrive on the Internet. Kurtz did six issues of a comic book based on his strip for Dork Storm Press before moving over to Image Comics -- this paperback collects those six issues.

Kurtz was still in the learning stage when he started this comic -- the first three stories are quite short, although entertaining. The third issue, a take on Manga and Anime, is particularly wild, but may be confusing for people not into that sort of thing. Starting with the fourth issue, the "PVP Christmas Special," Kurtz hit his stride. The Christmas story is a send-up of everything from "Miracle on 34th Street" to "It's a Wonderful Life," to "A Christmas Carol," with jokes from sources as various as Superman comics, the Battle of the Planets cartoon and Isaac Asimov. Issue five, a Matrix parody, pokes just as much fun at the current state of comic strips as it does of that movie, and the last story in the collection is a gut-busting yet oddly sweet tale about Skull the Troll trying to reunite estranged lovers Brent Sienna and Jade Fontaine. The book also gives us several pin-up pages and, for those of us who are into that sort of thing -- a roleplaying module that will allow you to game as the superhero characters the PVP crew plays in the comic.

This is a great packaged and a great value for a pretty good price. PVP is a wonderful strip, and it's impossible for anyone with a heart not to find something to love in this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars PvP now in convient bathroom form!, March 31, 2004

Pvp was the first Webcomic I had ever started reading when I first browsed them 4 years ago. It has grown into a terrific series, and still makes me chuckle daily. These six issues of the dork storm series of comics condensed into one TPB is a great value and a must have for the PvP fan, and I would recommend it for anybody that enjoys comics. The comics poke fun at a variety of modern happenings, and somewhat revolve around video game and dork culture as a whole. Congratulations to Scott Kurtz on his success.

This trade paperback collects the main stories from the first 6 issues of PVP that were originally published by Dork Storm Press.

I own virtually everything that Scott Kurtz has done, including the 6 original issues, and still bought this book. It's too great to miss, and great to be able to read them all at once.

The book also includes special items including art from the issues, inused art, and stats to use in playing a super-hero role-playing game using the characters.

If you like the online comic, or have never heard of it, make sure to pick this book up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful collection of comics, April 30, 2004

The Dork Ages is a wonderful compilation of the PVP issues before Mr. Kurtz went with Image Comics. It's funny and will ease PVP fans/new readers into a state of laughter. From an anime spoof to a matrix parody, The Dork Ages is sure to tickle the dork's funny bone.

Also watch for PVP at Large, the newest PVP volume.

4.0 out of 5 stars Giving Something Back, March 31, 2004

I have been reading the free comics at www.pvponline.com for a very long time now. Although Kurtz has flirted with the idea of micropayments and the like, the comic remains free. Instead, he trusts the community to support him. That is why I am getting The Dork Age.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good start, but lacking., May 5, 2008

I love PVP, let me say that right now.

I realize it's earlier work than the other books, but it has a strange structure that Kurtz is not used to which makes for an awkward read at times. It's not bad, just not his strength. Some the stories seem a little flat at times.

That said, it's still funny as all get out, but it's probably not the best introduction to the PVP staff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just hilarious!, May 18, 2004
This review is from: PvP: The Dork Ages (Paperback)
Great collection of comics! My only peeve would be that the first of the six comics is kind of boring, but it really just sets up the characters. The other 5 are just hysterical, and parody role-playing games, the Matrix, Christmas, Cupid, and an amazingly spot-on parody of a Japanese Manga. Add to that a special section after the comics which includes some really incredible unused artwork from other artists, based on Scott's characters, and you've got a REALLY good value for less than $10.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make Mine PvP, April 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: PvP: The Dork Ages (Paperback)
I first stumbled onto PVP as a webcomic and was instantly addicted. Obviously when The Dork Ages came out, I was excited about being able to get the Dork Storm issues in one handy trade paperback. I couldn't put it down. "Funny" doesn't do it justice. For any fan, this is a must-buy.
