I bought this to test ethernet cables but it can also test token ring cables as well.

First off, I'd describe it's quality is acceptable. It's pretty sturdy, but you can tell that it's economically made by the thinness of the battery compartment cover and the flimsy feel of the power switch. I'd recommend treating it with care if you would like it to last a long time.

It comes in two pieces, (the main tester and the remote), so it's easy to test cables that have already been installed on a jobsite. Just insert one end of the cable into the main tester, then walk to where the other end of the cable terminates and plug it into the remote. Switch on the main tester and check the status LEDs for connectivity.

It's powered by a single 9 volt battery which you put in the main tester.

The main tester itself has 11 LED lights: 1 Power indicator; 8 ethernet connectivity indicators; 1 BNC indicator and 1 GND indicator; while the remote has one less (no power indicator).

When you switch the unit on, the power LED flashes red. If you're testing a regular (straight though) ethernet cable, the green LEDs should illumiate in pairs (one on the main tester and one on the remote) for each of the 8 wires in such a cable. If one or more pairs does not illuminate, then it's possible that there's a broken connection.

A nice touch is that the power switch features both a slow and fast position which controls the rate at which the lights flash while performing the testing.

If there's one complaint that I have it'd have to be the label that they've used on the unit. It's a black arial font on a sort of shiny textured grey background which is very difficult to read under a florescent light. Small annoyance though.

There are definitely more expensive, higher quality testers on the market. But considering this one's functionality and the $ 6.99 I paid on Amazon, it's a really good deal...really.

Hi,
I'd like to start off by saying this tester works adequately and the price point makes it an exceptional value. It works great for me during occasional testing. I do have some complaints you might wish to consider, especially if you'll be using it frequently.

- The power LED always flashes when the unit is turned on and is bright enough to signal extraterrestrials. Seriously it's beyond distracting to the point of being very annoying. I'm going to put a sticker over it to save my eyes.

- It cycles/walks through the pairs one at a time checking only continuity not signal strength. You have to watch carefully as the green LED's next to each pair briefly light up, or don't light up. If you glance away you'll need to wait for it to go back through the full cycle again. It would be a lot nicer if all the good connections just showed green at once without the cycling business. It only takes a few seconds to go through the cycle but it seems like forever.

- Someone else mentioned this and I have to agree. They used black lettering with a dark gray background on the front of the unit. Under fluorescent lights, with the power LED blaring at you, it's pretty difficult to see. Why use black lettering on a gray background? Let's have some contrast please!

In summary, if you only use it occasionally like me you'll probably be pretty satisfied. However, if you use it all the time it may be one of those cases where you wish you'd spent a little more money for a better unit.

Update 01/01/2011: New video added. Check out that powerful LED action.

Best regards,
John

This product is exactly as advertised for a very decent price compared to any department store.

One very nifty trick that I found with the device is the main end of the device can tell you if a crimp is good or bad on your cable as you are putting it together, saving tons of time figuring out which end of the cable is bad and needs reworking.

This means as you are assembling your cat5/6 cable and you put the Tester on the first end you crimp before preparing the other end, and any of the lights (Pins 1-8) light up, you know that your crimp was faulty and you can cut the end off and try again. This was invaluable to know which end of the cable had faulty heads on them (purchased from another online store).

The reason this works is because the lights will trigger if they detect the pin is grounded. Since the only way the pin could be grounded is by being connected to another pin in the connector, it will light up if there is a problem.

Once you finish the cable and attach the other tester to the opposite end the lights will always light up because they are grounded, so this only works for determining if the first crimp is bad. If the first crimp is good and then the cable does not work, you know the second crimp is the bad one.

A simple continuity tester that cycles through all eight (8) wires and shows results at both ends of RJ-45. Good for testing long runs already installed. You see indicator at each end. Saves time wondering if cable is OK. A must have.

Note: As is obvious from the product image, and almost expected at this price point, this is not a "network cable tester and crimping tool kit" as both Amazon and the product's own packaging claim. It is a tester only.

Despite the obvious mislabeling I'd agree with majority of reviewers; this is $7 well spent for a TESTER that will see typical home or other light duty use.

The overly bright power LED and low contrast markings are not deal breaking faults and as others have noted, the "Headlines" worthy instructions are are hilarious.

It works, and is a very good value.

Update: Amazon still seems to think this is a crimper. Oh well, I tried.
