Pyle PL42BL 4-Inch 180 Watt Two-Way Speakers (Pair)

I replaced the stock under-dash speakers in my 1988 Toyota pickup with these. It is a big improvement as you might imagine. They screwed right in and had plenty of speaker wire. The sound is good as long as I don't have the bass turned up too high. I accidentally ended up with 2 pairs of these--I only wanted one pair--because I couldn't find if they were sold by the pair or by each. The Technical Details section says "Item Package Quantity: 1." I guess it means 1 pair. I figured that if I ordered 1, I'd only get one speaker, but if I ordered 2, I'd get 4 speakers. Better to have too many than not enough on installation day!

I got these for a Geo Metro that I got to save on gas. I did not want to put a ton of money into the speakers for a $1200 car. The car can only handle 4" speakers so I got 4 of these for it.

They do lack base as you would expect from such a small speaker but they do sound great. I may add a sub to them to get the real low stuff and then I think they would be great.

I would buy these again any day of the week. 4 speakers for less than $30 shipped to my house is a great deal and they don't sound bad at all. Anyone with stock 4" speakers in their car would do real well to replace with these. The difference for me was night and day.

Considering how inexpensive these speakers are, they perform well.
I upgraded stock speakers from my '92 Saab 900, and the difference wasn't too great. The Pyle's sounded better, but seemed to distort more at higher volumes and handle hardly any bass. My stereo sends maybe 18 watts rms max, and these speakers can barely handle it (not sure where they got 180 watts MAX)


I'm used to very high quality audio equipment, I suppose I was expecting too much from such low-priced speakers.

Overall, don't expect sound you would get from a higher-end system. Since these are lower-end (but NEW), I thought they would sound better than mid-end stock speakers from 15 years ago--not true. If you're renovating your sound system and want something that sounds excellent, don't get these speakers just because they look newer.
They will, however, work if you just want a simple sound system in your car that sounds like a 'normal' mid-lower end home stereo system.

These speakers replaced the stock speakers that came with my car; the foam speaker surrounds were all cracked and disintegrated. The Pyle 4" is a great value and should last since they have rubber surrounds. The sound quality is very average at best with noticeably less bass than the original speakers. I'm satisfied with them since they were very inexpensive but would have rather spent more to get better quality sound. It's very difficult to purchase speakers without auditioning them first since sound quality is very subjective.

I seriously doubt that they will handle 180 watts and would not recommend these for other than to use with a stock radio which is what I'm using them for. Since my wife is the primary driver of this car and doesn't care or hear the sound difference it's acceptable to her. If I had to listen to this everyday I would get better sounding speakers even for just the stock radio (no CD player).

Update: July 2011 I just couldn't take the sound quality of these speakers anymore and finally replaced them with the Pioneer 4" speakers (ordered from Amazon) since I had to replace the power window motor and regulator on one of the doors. The Pioneer's are a BIG IMPROVEMENT; much better bass and midrange; regret not purchasing these the 1st time. Physically comparing the Pyle versus the Pioneer the Pyle has a much larger magnet and overall looks like it would be a better speaker. This goes to show looks don't make a difference when it comes to sound quality. My wife even noticed the BIG IMPROVEMENT in sound quality!

I acqquired these to replace the OEM 4" speakers in the front of my Suzuki Sidekick (AKA K Mart Range Rover). Large magnet, good for the price. Chinese, of course. I was somewhat disappointed at the barely audible improvement over the OEM speakers at low volume levels. They do perform much better at higher volume levels, however.

This is a really great speaker. The quality is more than good enough for the price that you pay. I bought these with a set of 5 1/2" three-ways from Pyle. I swear that when I turn on bass boost in my car, they handle it just like a basic sub. I don't know how long they'd last keeping it like that, cause I don't. But they are very good. Very clean and clear sound that is put out well.

These speakers are high quality and give good sound. The only complaint I have is with the grille installation. The grilles slide into a grove on the speaker frame and do not lock in place. The grilles keep coming out of their grove, so I will have to glue them.

I had a the left front speaker that had busted in a 97 geo prizm. I got these to replace both my front speakers. I installed the busted speaker 1st and tested it. With the rear speakers turned off I switched from left to right on the front speakers. The 15 year old factory speaker was twice as loud and had a lot more bass. I ended up only replacing the busted speaker and leaving the other factory speaker. I would compare the sound quality a notch above a clock radio. The good news is that I don't have to listen to that busted speaker rattling:-)

I picked up a pair for a project I'm working on that needs small speakers. They sound pretty good considering the price. I have them hooked up to a small amp and though they lack bass (obviously they will) they have pretty good sound even at high volume. Overall you can't beat the price and they come with speaker wire, covers, screws, etc. I'm going to try out the 5.25 inch speakers and hope sound quality doesn't decrease too much in exchange for a little more bass. I'd definitely buy again.
