Pyle PL90MU - cheap, cool and working well,

This review is from: Pyle PL90MU In Dash Receiver with MP3 USB/SD/AUX In Player (Electronics)
In use for a couple months now, ordered not for myself (yet) but for my 16yr old son. Knowing how my kids treat cd's and dvd's this cd-less audio system seemed perfect.
Purchased from ANTonline, when we recieved it the volume knob was broken. Since it was just the plastic inner portion of the knob that keeps it locked to the rotary switch we just super glued it in lieu of the RMA return process to get another unit that may not be any better. Overall happy w/ the product performance.

I just finished installing the PL90MU in my 2000 Galant. First thing first, I bought a Mitsubishi wiring harness and I soldered the corresponding colored wires from the harness to the colored wires from the PL90MU. Once I removed the stock radio from my car, the PL90MU was simple plug and play with the wiring harness and radio antenna. I also grounded the black wire - however, I initially forgotten to do this step - and it still powered on and played.
I plugged in a 1GB thumb drive that I had a bunch of MP3's on and the PL90MU recognized the USB and took about 3 seconds to read initialize and launch the first song. I haven't tried the SD card slot yet, but as long as the USB is working good, I'm not going to trip; I imagine the SD will work as good as the USB slot. I next programmed the radio. The PL90MU has 18 preset FM stations and 12 preset AM station. Much more than my old stock radio. The bass and treble control weren't all that great, but overall, the sound is very clean and clear. The PL90MU has one output for an amp (red and white RCA plugs) and I feel that this unit could use an amp if you want a LOUD system. As is, it's pretty decent. There is an included remote control for the PL90MU, but I won't be using it. As a matter of fact, I just put it back in the box. Here in California, I can imagine that I'll be stopped by a cop for "text messaging" - the remote is small like a cell phone. I can't imagine why I would need to use a remote when the radio controls are in arms reach. Pros: Easy to install. I didn't even use the brackets that came with the PL90MU. I used the brackets from my stock radio. Easy to use controls. 18 preset FM stations - 12 AM stations. USB, SD card and Aux inputs. No CD! Cons: When first installed, the clock is flashing, however, there is no instructions on how to set the clock. I will have to go back and tinker with this later. I like having a clock and in my car, the only clock is on the radio. Not a whole lot of power. Advertised as 320 watts of power, but I imagine it's only cranking out 20 watts. Not extremely loud, but loud enough for my needs.

After having this radio installed. I didn't like it from square 1. For these many reasons (especially the last one!)
1. Switching songs takes a really long time and is sometimes painful to listen to. Upon switching songs, the stereo will fade out of the song you are listening to, and then fade into the next song. A process that takes a few seconds. During this process the song skips, and the whole effect is just annoying, and time consuming. If you have more than 20 songs on your USB drive, forget it. It will take you a literal 10 minutes to get from song 1 to the last song. It takes that long. 2. The screen in which displays the information for the songs, clock, and everything else, is virtually un-viewable from above. Meaning, if your radio is low on your dash, you will not see ANYTHING. You have to literally be on eye level with it, to view the screen. Something you can't do when you are driving. 3. The stereo would make a multiple amount of my songs skip randomly. 4. Turning up the volume is annoying due to the fact that there is no knob, it uses buttons. The max volume number is 63, so if it starts off on 3, you need to hit the button SIXTY times for it to be the maximum volume. 5. USB playback functions aren't labeled on the unit. I had to go into the manual to find out that all the functions for play back (pause, repeat, ect) were actually on the numbers you use to program radio stations on. It wouldn't be a problem if they LABELED THEM! 6. The unit I got looked completely different from the unit shown in the image. 7. And finally, I only had this thing for THREE DAYS and it died on me. I plugged in my USB drive, it said "USB ERROR" I unplugged it to try again, and realized that the whole stereo locked up. It was stuck on the "USB ERROR" screen. Even when I restart the car, that same screen keeps coming up. THIS wouldn't be a problem if I could detach the faceplate and reset it! But there is no reset button!! Bottom line, do not get this radio. The only thing that was good about it was that is plays songs from your USB. If that is all you want (which is what I wanted) then maybe you will have better luck than I did and wont have the damn thing die on you after 3 days.
