This is a good product, I was hoping for an excellent product.

I've saved so much time and money with this thing. i tested a box full of cables (maybe 50 or 60 - all different types) and it worked like a champ.

This tester saved time over a basic continuity tester and quickly identified bad lines and confirmed successful repairs.

I bought this when my 10+ year old Ebtech died from a leaky battery. Since it's a sealed unit (riveted instead of screwed together) it was not salvageable.

Other reviewers have indicated they felt this Pyle-Pro device feels less sturdy than the Ebtech. I would respectfully disagree - the connectors are equivalent and the case material measures within .002" of the same thickness as the Ebtech shell.

Pros:
1. Tests all the most used connectors in the SR business.
2. Generic continuity tester via banana plugs.
3. Easy batter replacement.
4. Usage instructions printed on the face of the device.
5. No "ON/OFF" buttons needed. My old Ebtech used to get turned on accidentally in my case and, when needed, the battery was dead.

Cons:
1. Does not have active signal generation for testing various cables and devices i.e. speakers, mixer channels, etc...
2. Not as fast to diagnose problems as the Ebtech - requires investigation of each conductor instead of the Ebtech's matrix of LEDs.
3. LEDs are VERY bright - can be annoying in show situations where you don't want to "glow" from your test equipment.
4. A bit large. I ended up using its box as a case within my mixer briefcase. Keeps it from getting bumped around against all the other stuff.

Bottom line: very useful and well designed device for testing a very large array of cables. Still young (<1 month) but, since it's screwed together and can therefore be dismantled and presumably fixed, I have high hopes that I'll not need another in the foreseeable future.

I really wanted to be pleased with this product. For several years I had a Behringer cable tester, and it finally failed on me. I came to Amazon to reorder one. I saw the Pyle-Pro PCT40 and thought since it also offered capability of testing Speakon and USB cables I'd go for that. The first one arrived and it wouldn't even light up the indicator light to test the battery. I finally figured out I had to shove the rotary selector switch to one side (press it laterally) to make that work. There was clearly a short or fault, not a good sign for a tester. I returned it for replacement. The second one would test the battery just fine. However, when testing cables I also had to hold the rotary switch pressed laterally to get it to complete the circuit. In my case, I received two units that should have been caught by QC. Both have been returned to Amazon. I sent the manufacturer an email a week ago to notify them of the problem, and I've heard nothing. Having a piece of test equipment with a short or bad connection in it does me no good. I hate to slam a company, especially in this economy, but I'm afraid Pyle Audio let me down, and it will take quite a bit convincing, and other customers' experiences, before I consider their products again.

I ordered this, and a PCT40 did indeed arrive... But it's not the same model. The model shown in the picture has a quick release battery compartment toward the front of the unit. The model that was delivered had a battery compartment on the underside that is only accessible by removing a screw. The screw was halfway stripped. This means I have to find a machine screw to replace it with, and that I'll have to keep a screwdriver with me at all times when testing cables. Also, this small screw is just another tiny part that is easy to lose.

Part of the reason I chose this model was the (apparent) ease of changing the battery. I'm disappointed that the image shown is NOT of the actual product. It was misleading.

I have a few products from Pyle and I would not say they are top of the line, but they are decent. I bought this unit to test the many dozens of different type of audio cables I have and use often. My first impression was that the case was sturdy and built well. The metal structure is solid, and the label printing is clear. The unit did not ship with a battery which will require a 9V that is installed in the back side of the unit through a small door which was rather frustrating to open and close. The 9V battery does have a very tight fit so you want to make sure your wires are neatly tucked to the side of the battery when closing the door.

Another observation which was to be expected for the price of the unit was the connectors. Although, not the worst I have seen they are certainly not the best either. I feel that a couple good knocks or a drop could break or chip them if you were not careful. However, they are acceptable and do the job. I proceeded to test the unit by doing a battery check which is all the way to the far right of the dial. I personally would have liked to see it on the first click with maybe a different color LED so you would not have to turn the knob through all the positions to check the battery and then back to test a cable. If it were in the first position of the switch you would get a battery test each time before you tested a cable, and this could save time especially if you were testing many cables throughout the day.

After my first test which I purposely created a couple of faulty cables such as tip-grounded, shield lifted, tip, ring, sleeve swapped and so on, the unit performed well and gave me the correct indication on the LED's.
