5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected
The PM5010 ear muffs are surprisingly good. I compared them to a pair of 29db ear muffs. They are definitely quieter but it is hard to tell how much quieter. These ear muffs press more firmly to your ears but are still quite comfortable.

The ear muffs I compared them to are: Peltor Professional Noise Canceling Earmuff #H10A

2.0 out of 5 stars TIGHT FIT
The head band is tight against the top of the head and the muffs do not come down far enough. They are probably fine if your head is not very big.

The PM5010 ear muffs are quite a bit smaller than the 29db pair and cost 1/2 as much. The nice thing about the PM5010 ear muffs is that they are lower profile and won't get in the way when you are shooting a rifle. The larger ear muffs will press against the stock of the gun and sometimes keep you from lining up properly on the sites. The PM5010 are the perfect ear muffs for any gun enthusiast. They even take less space in your range bag.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some getting used to, May 9, 2010

This review is from: Pyramex PM5010 Folding Ear Muffs NRR 31 (Sports)
I commute 2 hours a day, using public transportation. I use these on top of my earphones to drown ambient noise, that way I can keep the volume of the music low and protect my hearing. The alternative would have been to buy around-the-ear headphones, but reconciling good sound quality and good isolation is expensive. I already get excellent sound quality from my current earphones, which weren't cheap. Why pay more big bucks for a new headphone when I can augment my current system for $9 with these muffs, and get unmatched isolation?
Classical is the most challenging music to listen to in a noisy environment. Slow paced adagios and some "quieter" instruments can become completely inaudible over the roar of the engine. You get lost minutes of sound here and there, like listening to half a soundtrack. But with these muffs I finally hear all the details in the music with no interruptions in the listening experience.
I like that this product is completely unmarked. No logo, no writing. Finally a company that doesn't cheat us into becoming walking billboards for them... I wanted something I could wear in public without looking ridiculous; bulbous drums with fluorescent stripes aren't exactly inconspicuous. I bought these for the looks, and I'm happy to report that I get don't get any.
Looks aside, I don't think I would have bought anything under NRR 25. I don't think the isolation of the PM5010 is as advertized, but it's quite effective when combined with the earphones, which already provide some isolation of their own. When sitting on the bus, there remains a won-won-won from nearby conversations. But turn on the music and it almost completely disappears, along with traffic noises.
On the first try they were extremely uncomfortable, like clamps around my head. My ears turned purple when I took them off for lack of circulation. I got a headache. But after a few uses they must have relaxed; either I am getting used to them, or they are getting used to me.
PS. I ordered from BP Medical Supplies. The delivery took over three weeks. That's very long. Maybe that's because I'm in Canada.

1.0 out of 5 stars WAY TOO TIGHT!!, November 20, 2008
I have a small head (I have a hard time finding sunglasses don't make me look as ridiculous as the Olsen twins w/ their enormous sunglasses). Despite my small head, these things are so tight, it's like a vice grip squeezing my head. I can't wear them, but it's not really worth the shipping costs to send them back. I thought I might be able to stretch it, but the band is just hard plastic, so you can't stretch it. I am tempted to just snap the plastic in half so that I can use it, and maybe duct-tape it. Otherwise, I've completely wasted my money on this.

Pros: Looks nice; packs well; works excellent
Cons: Hurts like a mother!

Okay, so I already figured the above when I purchased - but I figured since I have to buy the smallest hat they make because I have small head, that the tightness wouldn't be as big of a deal. It probably isn't as big of a deal for me... IF I wore these things 5 minutes or less at a time... but I bought these to wear on flights to cut out the noise. After about 15 minutes, my ears hurt so bad.

I can tolerate it for an hour or more, but it's not exactly fun... but they work well. Great if you're going to take fire a few shots and then remove them...

I just wish they'd make a revised product a little less tight - EVERYTHING else about this product is awesome.

I struggled with this purchase because so many people seem to buy the Peltor H10A and I had never bought sound deading ear muffs before. I had been using an old set of Koss stereo headphones for hearing protection when using power tools (jigsaw, Dremel, etc) and thought it was time to get something better. Several reviews of many of these ear muff products complain about how tight a fit this type of hearing protection can be. Obviously each individual's experience will depend on their head size so in that respect choosing one over another is complete guess work but if they are too uncomfortable then you can probably return them. In my case I found these to be comfortable and effective. Yes they are snug but the padding is very comfortable. I am not a construction worker and would not expect to need these on my head for more than 30 minutes at a time but I could wear them longer without a problem. They fold nicely for easy transport and they seem like they will hold together for the light use I plan on putting them through. They are not as bulky as the Peltor H10A is which also adds to their comfort. Another reviewer commented that they do not cut out as much noise as their sound rating would indicate but I have no other muffs to compare to so I will just say that they cut down the sound of power tools enough for me to stop worrying about damage to my hearing. I am happy with my purchase and even more so knowing that they were on sale at half the price of the Peltor H10A when I purchased them.

I have a number of different ear muffs to protect my hearing because of constant ringing in the ears caused by past over use of stereo headphones. I would rate the PM5010 Pyramex Ear Muffs at around NNR 20 to 23 db as compared to my other ear muff brands. The only thing I can say as positive reasons to buy these are that they fold up nicely if space is an issue and they look better then the other larger styles. But then, the thinner look is the very reason they don't block out as much noise as the others!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Noise Reduction, March 31, 2008
This review is from: Pyramex PM5010 Folding Ear Muffs NRR 31 (Sports)
I was irritated at the cost of noise reduction muffs for shooting ranges so I turned to amazon. These were less than 10% of the cost of most shooting muffs but have a higher noise reduction rating. Excellent bargain and more adjustable fit than I expected.

They keep outside noise to a minimum which is great for loud flights etc...(also they don't look as dorky as some of the other protective earmuffs...you could almost believe they are just a regular pair of headphones)

The only problem for me is that they are really tight and start hurting around my ears from the pressure after an hour, I have a medium size head and they still hurt so I can't blame that. But for 10 bucks i'll live with it

The product is work fine, a sound protection is seem to high enough, the only my concern is how long this thing will survive with such "elegant" brackets, they look so unreliable ...
