4.0 out of 5 stars A comedic guide to relationships in the 90's., May 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pyrates [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Contrary to Leonard Maltin, who is, after all, in his late 40's, and very unlikely to have ever actually had sex, my friends and I found Pyrates to be a wonderfully funny tounge-in-cheek tale of a relationship so hot it burns... literally. The pair, one a concert cellist, the other a photography student, meet at a rave, fall in lust and burn the city down with their romance. You see, their sex causes combustion. It's quirky, it's absurd, it's fun! The story goes on to explore all the stages of the relationship - obssessive love, feeling trapped, ennui, break-up, getting back together - interspersed with commentary from the Greek chorus of her 14 year old student, and his 30ish womanizing roommate. Toss in the recurring theme of their attempts to solve their firey tendencies, and it becomes a movie that inspires laughter at the recognition of feelings experienced, situations known, and people that you'll be familiar with. People between the ages of 25 and 35 will be most likely to enjoy it. Lighten up, Leonard!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Perfection of Rivkah Rothstein, November 18, 2001

My sister rented this one night amidst cries of extreme derision... we weren't pleased until we watched it all the way through, and afterwards we had to apologize. If this was going to be the future of cinema, the nineties seemingly had hope.

Of course, this movie got buried into obscurity (relegated to the domain of 'six degrees of Kevin Bacon'), which is a shame, because it was more insightful and a lot funnier than any other date film on the market. It predates the pop culture leanings of Tarantino (script-wise), and the casting is brilliant.

You'll love the 'Tainted Love' serenade scene because we've all been there, and because it's amazing in it's awfulness. The film deserved a lot better.

5.0 out of 5 stars quirky, in a word, July 12, 1999

This was one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen, but it was fun. And funny, too. And pretty darn sweet. Not groundbreaking stuff, but very enjoyable unless you're especially uptight.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Kevin and Kyra Show, March 19, 2004

I was expecting a complete turkey of a film but was pleasantly surprised. Just goes to show you can't always believe the critics, as attested by other reviews here. As long as you're not expecting "Children of Paradise" or something, you won't be disappointed. "Pyrates" is just a fun - and very risque - romantic comedy. Definitely not for the kids, but adults who aren't too uptight should enjoy it. Lots of funny lines and the direction isn't bad either. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick really carry this film along, and their onscreen chemistry wasn't just an act, since they're actually married in real life. Good over-the-top campy entertainment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will someone please release this on DVD?, August 1, 2006

I never got a chance to see this movie in the theater, but I fell in love with it on VHS and have since gone through 2 copies since the mid-90's.

This movie truly deserves a re-release onto DVD. Sure, it's a little cheesy, but that's part of the fun. I thought it was twice as funny and edgy as Reality Bites, but never quite got it's day in the sun.

To top it off, the soundtrack is absolute perfection: Violent Femmes, Soft Cell, Wild Cherry and then some.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jonathon hit the nail on the head., June 17, 2001

My husband groaned when I picked this one up at the rental place--looked like a bad movie, read the back like a bad movie--but it's great! I came here trying to see if I could get it on DVD because we want to own it. If you liked Strictly Ballroom or Ferris Bueller's Day Off, then this is right up your alley.
