5.0 out of 5 stars Unvarnished facts about the Great Pyrenees dog as a breed
This book distills most of what I want my puppy buyers to know in one easy to read volume. I'll fill them in on details - what to feed, how to train - but this gives them both the pros and cons of owning a big white, shedding, barking, sometimes-aggressive dog. Some excellent pictures show the different styles of Pyrs, and the clean white show dog is contrasted by the...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a helpful book for us
Our family got a new Great Pyrenees puppy (9 months old). We wanted one good Pyr book that helped us with some basics; feeding him and training him. On both counts this book let us down. In "How much to feed:" the book described how to tell if your dog is overweight and had no information on quantity of food. For training the book emphasized sending the dog...

This book distills most of what I want my puppy buyers to know in one easy to read volume. I'll fill them in on details - what to feed, how to train - but this gives them both the pros and cons of owning a big white, shedding, barking, sometimes-aggressive dog. Some excellent pictures show the different styles of Pyrs, and the clean white show dog is contrasted by the tall, muddy working dog.

This little book was reviewed and edited prior to publication by some of the most knowledgeable Great Pyrenees people in the country and its information is accurate. Pyrs practice "selective deafness", they roam without a good fence, and they shed enough each year to make a sweater - these "negative" facts are honestly presented, along with the beauty, protectiveness and intelligence of this wonderful livestock guardian breed.

I consider it valuable enough that a copy goes home with every new puppy and Rescued dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Pyrenees - Great Information at a Tiny Price!, May 7, 2000

This review is from: Great Pyrenees (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
Great Pyrenees by Joan Hustace Walker is surely a delight in many ways. Her resources were obviously reliable, her photographer excellent, and her writing extremely intelligible. Ms. Walker presents the facts about this wonderful breed in a no-nonsense fashion, recognizing this dog's personality, needs, excentricities and the absolute need for early and continued training. The information on selection of a Great Pyrenees is invaluable! This book is an asset to Pyr owners, breeders and rescue workers, as well as those who are taking their first look at this fabulous dog! Congratulations to the author and publisher on a concise, valuable book!

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT HELP FOR GREAT PYR OWNERS, April 19, 2003

Owning a Great Pyrenees is not a simple task, but this slim volume was tremendous help in preparing for caring for a Pyr. Pyrs are huge, beautiful animals with some special needs, and no owner should acquire a Pyr without some professional guidance such as this book. It is one of the few, really well-written guidebooks for Pyr ownership available, as this is not one of the most popular breeds in this country.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book!!!, November 30, 2007

I love this book. After adopting 2 baby Great Pyreness puppies, this book helped me understand them in a way I would have never known. They are beautiful dogs that have lots of love for there owners, however they like to have a lot of land to roam, and have a big barking issue. This book taught why they bark so much, it is because they are WATCH dogs, and they feel the need to bark in order to protect there heard/Owners. Great book!

If you own a Pyr or are considering one, you need this book. It provides the history, standards and what to expect when you own this breed. I love my Pyr, but it is not the pet for everyone. This book will help you decide if it is right for you. If you already own one, it is very interesting and has some nice pictures of these beautiful dogs.

I bought two books when we adopted our Pyr from a rescue clinic. We knew a little about the breed traits, that were reaffirmed in this book. Great pictures and easy to read. You will be glad you got this instruction booklet.

This book is absolutley wonderful! History, training tips, and a no nonsense Pros/Cons approach to Pyr ownership. I would highly recommend to anyone who has or is thinking of getting a Pyrenees. A wealth of knowledge on this wonderful breed, in a small, easy reference book.

this was a great read, it had a few differences in what I'd read elsewhere about pyrs, but was still very informative and had good pictures, as well as an extensive section about illnesses your pyr can get.
