5.0 out of 5 stars how to make pyrex explode
This is a great collection of stuff for a starter-kitchen. You get some mixing/serving bowls, some serving cups for deserts (great for cooling cooked pudding in the fridge), a nice covered casserole for microwaving, and a good collection of baking stuff. 1.0 out of 5 stars glasscakepan
I have or had one of the glass cake pans and I used it to bake alot of stuff but today I had Beef ribs in it and it exploded in my oven I had the oven temp set at 350 and when I went to check on it, the pan was shattered. Would you please send me some information on why it would do that. Thanks very much, Dianna

5.0 out of 5 stars how to make pyrex explode, September 9, 2003
This review is from: Pyrex 16-pc. Starter Set (Kitchen)
This is a great collection of stuff for a starter-kitchen. You get some mixing/serving bowls, some serving cups for deserts (great for cooling cooked pudding in the fridge), a nice covered casserole for microwaving, and a good collection of baking stuff. The only thing I'd add is a couple of loaf pans, and lids for the bowls so they could be used for storage in the fridge.

If you're going to use Pyrex, however, there's something you need to understand. Pyrex glass is great stuff. Non-reactive, doesn't stain, goes from freezer to fridge to table to oven with no probs. Notice, I said TABLE to oven. Not freezer to oven...

Like most substances on the planet, glass expands a little when it's hot. Unlike metal, however, which is what most cookware is made out of, glass doesn't distribute that heat. If one part of a METAL pan is slowly heated, the heat will travel through the whole pan, even into the handle, and the whole pan will expand a little. If one part of a GLASS pan is heated, however, only that part will get hot, and only that part will expand. So what happens if one part expands, and the rest of the pan, that that part is still attached to, does not? The pan material gets stressed. Stressed metal warps. Stressed glass shatters.

If you're baking in Pyrex, you can't take it from the freezer to a preheated oven - the part that is touching the oven shelf will expand too fast for the rest to keep up with. BOOM. If the pan is already in the oven and hot, you can't add cool water to a baked-dry pan - the part the water touches first will shrink a little, and the rest won't. BOOM. If there's a deep scratch or ragged chip in the pan, the internal stress may build up even if the heat is even - the pan will break into bigger pieces, but it will still break.

If you're willing to take proper care of this stuff, it's great. If not, stick with metal for the oven, and plastic for the microwave.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars!, January 8, 2005
This review is from: Pyrex 16-pc. Starter Set (Kitchen)
I highly recommend this set. I love the mixing bowls and the 4 smaller bowls I have used for dips for parties, it's a perfect size! I only use Pyrex measuring cups, so this one is perfect. I also love the pie pan and the covers that come with the set. It really is a nice addition to any kitchen!

5.0 out of 5 stars They last forever if you follow the directions.., February 18, 2003

I have not purchased this precise set of Pyrex, but I grew up using Pyrex, and I now own all the pieces in this set except the mixing bowls, the cool plastic lids, and the little ramekins (although my grandmother has the mixing bowls and my mother has dozens of the ramekins). I did previously make the mistake of trying to simmer a sauce on the stovetop in the covered dish/dutch oven - and after the 5th time I did that (I hadn't read the instructions at that point, either), the dish *did* break. Lesson learned. That's why they say don't use them on the stove! However, I think it says something that the dish stood up to my inadvertent abuse 5 times before it finally gave up the ghost. Also, when using Pyrex (or any other glassware) in the oven, you must have *some* liquid in the bottom of the pan to start with, otherwise when the hot juices of whatever you're cooking drop onto the glass, it can cause the pan to shatter. My guess is the other reviewer with the rib incident neglected that step. One other thing to note (personal experience speaking here again) is that you should *never* put a Pyrex pan on the stove over the oven vent to cool. It will overheat and shatter. Invest in trivets or cooling racks instead! :-) At any rate, I am very pleased with my current (10+ yr. old) set of Pyrex, and am in the process of expanding my collection. It's great stuff as long as you follow the simple directions (much like any other product).

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Pyrex Set, March 6, 2004
By
This review is from: Pyrex 16-pc. Starter Set (Kitchen)
I recently recieved this starter set as a housewarming gift! It is so practical! I don't know how I survived so long without owning Pyrex. It's great for cooking in, as well as storing food. Tomorrow I will cook a casserole in the rectangular container and then put the lid on it to store the leftovers after dinner. It's easier than having to transfer food from the pan to a storage container. :) If you've never owned pyrex, you don't know what you are missing. :)

I don't know how we ever survived in the kitchen without this handy set. We have used every item multiple times--even the parts we never thought we'd use! The price is terrific, too, for a gift for newlyweds or recent grads just leaving home. They'll appreciate it for certain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Kitchen Set!, November 3, 2006
By
This review is from: Pyrex 16-pc. Starter Set (Kitchen)
I loved the pyrex set. I had priced the pieces seperatly at the store and buying them online with the starter kit is much much cheaper. You don't think you would use the little 4 bowls but I do all the time! Worth the price if your looking to update your kitchen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for those starting a new home!, April 13, 2004
By A Customer

I recently received this as a shower gift. We have basically nothing starting out as a young couple, and this was wonderful to receive. The glass is thick, and it gives you some much needed basics all in one kit. The bowls and measuring cup are especially useful on a regular basis. Quality stuff... I would recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the description say "broiler-proof"? No., December 31, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Pyrex 16-pc. Starter Set (Kitchen)
Don't listen to the review by Debbi. You shouldn't be allowed in the kitchen if you are dumb enough to try and broil food in anything but a broiler pan. She's a tool. This set is really a good deal and has all the useful stuff you'll need for a new place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!, January 20, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Pyrex 16-pc. Starter Set (Kitchen)
This is a great set-you can mix any amount of ingredients in the 3 different mixing bowls, bake a casserole, and prepare a pie all with this 16-piece set. Then you can store the leftovers! The clear glass and sealable containers let you keep your leftovers visible and ready to pop in the oven. Great for a first apartment or house. You'll be excited to cook and you'll have it for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Set! The Best!, December 28, 2003
By
This review is from: Pyrex 16-pc. Starter Set (Kitchen)
I love this set. Absolutely love it. I have always heard that Pyrex is the best you can buy, but wasn't sure until I had my very own kitchen to cook in. I received this set as a gift, and it has been a total lifesaver! If you follow the directions, everything should be fine. It is easy to use, and so convenient--just don't take it out of the oven, and put it in the freezer ;-)
