Pyrex 6-Piece Clear Glass Rectangular Storage Set with Blue Lids

Since 1915, experienced cooks and beginners alike have reached for Pyrex glassware products. It all started with our glass bakeware - loved for generations because it's affordable, durable, odor and stain proof, and great for cooking, serving and storing. Since then, new favorites have joined old standbys. The Pyrex line now includes products for the entire kitchen, including pots and pans, metal bakeware, and kitchen tools and gadgets. They're all designed and proven to make cooking a little easier. Today, over 70 percent of U.S. homes have Pyrex glass products, with many cooks passing them down from generation to generation - which we think is pretty neat.

Pyrex Fast Facts

        • Pyrex glass bakeware is, and has always been, durable, reliable and safe.
        • The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission conducted an investigation in 2008 and concluded that Pyrex glass bakeware does not present a safety concern.
        • While both borosilicate and soda lime are appropriate compositions for glass bakeware, heat strengthened soda lime is more resistant to impact breakage.
        • Pyrex glass bakeware has been made - first by Corning Incorporated and now by World Kitchen - using the same soda lime composition and heat-strengthening process for more than 60 years.
        • World Kitchen has always manufactured Pyrex glass bakeware in the U.S. and our packaging proudly displays the American flag and the "made in the USA" label.

Pyrex glassware is a must have for any serious kitchen. Available in an array of functional shapes and sizes, each individual piece can be used for baking, cooking, microwaving, serving, and storage.

        • 6-piece Storage Set includes 1-each: 3-cup rectangle dish, 6-cup rectangle, and 11-cup rectangle dish with matching blue plastic lids.
        • Ideal for refrigerator and freezer storage or taking food on the go.
        • BPA free plastic lid is dishwasher safe (top rack only).
        • Nest and stack for easy storage when not in use.
        • Non-porous glass won't absorb stains or odors.
        • Glass is pre-heated oven, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, and dishwasher safe.
        • Made in the USA.
        • Limited 2-year warranty.

We were pleased to find that these containers can be used for some types of COOKING, not just for storage.

We like the convenience of containers that can be used for baking or microwaving, and then covered and used to store any leftovers, without scooping into different containers.

These containers do not have handles on the sides, so they can be tricky to grasp with potholders when removing from a microwave or regular oven. On the other hand, the lack of handles does allow these rectangular containers to use space efficiently in the refrigerator.

The paper labels/inserts indicate these Pyrex glass containers are oven safe (in a regular oven, preheated), and microwave safe, freezer safe, and dishwasher safe. However, like most Pyrex, they are NOT broiler safe, and should not be used on stove-top burners. There is also a warning against use in a toaster oven.

The plastic lids should not be used in a regular oven, of course. I assume we should unseal and loosen the lid, before we put a container in the microwave. It is BPA free, according to the fine print on the paper label.

The plastic lids go on easily, and fit OK, but are not perfectly tight. I think if I turned a container upside down, the contents would leak around the edges of the lid. I assume that if the lids are put in a dishwasher, they should only be on the top rack, if at all. When I looked at reviews for some other Pyrex storage containers, a few reviewers recommended hand washing plastic lids; they thought the lids might keep their shape better if hand washed.

We have not yet put these containers through dozens of uses, so I cannot yet say how durable they are. I will add a "comment" to this review in the future, if there are problems later on.

In case you haven't read the January issue of Consumer Reports yet, let me summarize: Corning sold Pyrex to World Kitchen, who is using cheaper glass which makes it more likely to shatter from heat. The European Pyrex still uses the traditional Pyrex formula and is as heat-resistant as ever. Consumer Reports says: "We baked at least five samples of each brand in a 450-degree oven. All of the U.S. Pyrex and Anchor dishes shattered when placed on the wet countertop. None of the European dishes ... broke"
I recommend buying these brands: Arcuisine and Marinex which are sold on Amazon.

I wish I were joking! While roasting chicken thighs and carrots in the oven, I decided to order another Pyrex measuring cup. Skimming though the reviews I noticed several reviewers mentioning that Pyrex isn't "Pyrex" anymore (i.e. borosilicate glass), but had been sold to another company and is now cheaper lime soda glass, which apparently has a tendency to shatter violently when moved between environments of different temperatures (news to me). So with 45 minutes or so to kill, I read some reviews mentioning a Consumer Reports article from 2011, then the Snopes page (you can Google it), then the Chowhound thread, then I mentioned the whole thing to my girlfriend, and how it's still borosilicate in Europe, and that people are probably overreacting either way, or they're taking it from an oven and sticking it right in freezer or something silly like that. Then I take a peek in the oven to check on my carrots; looking good, so far ...then a couple minutes later ...POW! And now there are shards of glass in the carrots (or more accurately, carrots in a pile of glass), in the chicken, and all over the bottom (and maybe even the top, I'm not sure yet), of the oven. So it 1:30am, and in lieu of dinner, I'm writing this review.

Still, I consider myself lucky after reading some people's stories of these things exploding on the counter top like shrapnel grenades. It is no joke. I wasn't resting it on a cold granite countertop or anything like that. It had been at room temperature in a normal cabinet before going in the preheated 350F oven. It contained room temperature carrots drizzled in room temperature olive oil. It was in the oven at 350 degrees, and had been for about 40 minutes -- and then it exploded.

These are THE BEST refrigerator dishes!!! The big one holds a LOT (almost three quarts), but, because of its flat shape takes up very little room in the fridge, where the whole set stacks nicely. The size range couldn't be better. In the cabinet, they nest for storage, and they last forever. I bought my first set about 20 years ago, and I've given sets as gifts. You can bake in them in both oven and microwave, serve, freeze or refrigerate. Does it get any better? Yes! The rectangular shape fits more efficiently into cabinets, refrigerators and freezers, where round shapes are space wasters, and space is often at a premium.

The previous reviewer was disappointed by the size but the size is given, in quarts (3-cup, 1.5-qt., and 2.75-qt. capacities) just like most good recipes will advise you. I like the variety in sizes. One will be ideal for almost anything you make.

I love the additional lids. No more fumbling with aluminum foil and finding a place in the fridge where another item might squish your food. They are great for taking to potlucks too!
