SAFETY ALERT,
By Tom o'Bedlam (Vermont) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pyrex Grip Rite 3-Quart Rectangular Baking Dish with Lid
In case you haven't read the January issue of Consumer Reports yet, let me summarize: Corning sold Pyrex to World Kitchen, who is using cheaper glass which makes it more likely to shatter from heat. The European Pyrex still uses the traditional Pyrex formula and is as heat-resistant as ever. Consumer Reports says: "We baked at least five samples of each brand in a 450-degree oven. All of the U.S. Pyrex and Anchor dishes shattered when placed on the wet countertop. None of the European dishes ... broke"
Amazon sells the European product:Arcuisine Elegance Glass 2.8 Quart Rectangular Baker

This is a typically nice dish from Pyrex. Nice sturdy glass. Lid that fits well. What more can you ask for? :)

Item was much cheaper than similar items on eBay. The lid is handy for storage only, but is plastic and cannot be put in oven.

Bigger than specified - be careful,

The dimensions given do not account for the full length, so I returned it.
It would not fit in my microwave or refrigerator. Amazon would not pay the postage, even though the information was misleading

Great for storage & stacking in fridge or freezer. I have an inn & tea time treats are baked & stored in these containers. Wish tops were clear plastic so you can see what's inside.

The lid makes this the most practical pan I use in my kitchen. I've let it cool and can put it directly into the freezer.

These baking dishes are SO handy. The lids are essential if you tend to bring dips or food over to share with family or friends. They're also great if you are expecting to have leftovers and want to throw it straight into the fridge. I like to make an easy layer dip, heat it up at home and go straight to an event with a nice hot dip in hand, with the cover on top to keep it warm, and to keep it from spilling.

Shattered,

Had this 3-quart oblong as part of a set. We used it 2x, the second and final time it shattered minutes after we took our meal out of the oven. Glad no one got hurt. Called customer service for a warranty and the person on the other line sounded like she got many calls regarding broken glass, not very friendly, but they are sending another one to us. I guess it'll just be used for storage, definitely not to be used for baking because I already learned my lesson and do not need another exploding dish.

Lid doesn't fit!,

Is this another one of those things where one company in one measuring standard sells itself off to anther with another measuring standard? The lid is the wrong size (too small) width-(shorter dimension)-wise! In all my years of touting Pyrex as the standard, I'm stunned. And kiddies, when I say it won't fit, I mean it is just under 1/4: too short. It will not close over pan under any circumstances. WTF, Pyrex? We miss you already! :( |
