1.0 out of 5 stars Watch out!!
I have owned 3 of these (and one of the narrow ones)and every one has snapped in two at the base of the handle with no unusual trauma. Anybody know of another heat-safe spatula out there?

A spatula is simple device designed to help you stir, lift, and spread ingredients in cooking. Pyrex (and other manufacturers) have adopted the latest technological advances to make the spatula safer. Previously, most spatulas were made of rubber making it at-risk for melting when you stuck it into a hot cooking environment (e.g. a pot of boiling liquid). By making the tool out of silicone, it is now heat resistant to up to 600 degrees making it safe for virtually any kitchen use (except perhaps putting it over an open flame).

Buy several since I sometimes find myself using many of them as I prepare elaborate multi-course dinners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but be careful in the dishwasher!, June 24, 2001

I really like this spatula and would buy another one. The only problem was that after about the third time I washed it in the dishwasher, I was disappointed to see that it came out with splits on both sides. It was not by knives so I have been puzzled as to what could have happened. I still use it all the time even though it has the splits in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, December 22, 2002

The advent of high-temperature silicone has sprouted a number of new spatulas from various manufacturers.

Pyrex's combination of reasonable price, good blade design and quality materials gets my thumbs up. Not only is it an excellent bowl squeegee, it also works well as a cooking spatula which won't mar non-stick cookware. The 600 deg F temperature limit (some others are lower) means I'm not so worried about it standing up to hot oil, although Pyrex probably wouldn't recommend using it this way. What's nice is that unlike other materials, this blade does not warp. Mine is still in perfect shape after 18 months of use.

There is a protrusion part-way up the handle which allows it to catch on the side of a large bowl. Pyrex put it exactly where I grip the handle when mixing batter so it is a little uncomfortable.

My only other gripe is that while I soaked the spatula one time, traces of food must have seeped into the gap between the handle and blade and now mould is visible through the translucent design. But don't let this put you off. Just don't repeat what I did.

All in all a great classic design which I expect will be around for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, March 10, 2002

I LOVE this scraper! My husband bought two for me (the one available here, and another about half the width) for Christmas two years ago. I have used them to DEATH. I managed to wreck the scraping edges on them by scraping out tin cans with sharp edges. Otherwise, they have held up PERFECTLY. So if you buy one of these, use something else to scrape out cans! I have used them to make hard candies and they are TOTALLY heat resistant. I am a chef and I wish that the restaurant I worked at would spend the money for these. They make life SO much easier. I plan on ordering several of these little wonders and stashing them away. Because I just know that since I love them so much, Pyrex will inevitably discontinue them. Murphy's Law. ;)

It's silicon and and it's spatula from pyrex, what else is there really to know?

The only problem I had with it is that the head is a little stiff and the one corner is a little sharply cut. The two combined can make for a unpleasant poke if you don't pay attention to it while washing or taking it out the drawer.

Other than that, it's a great spatula, just be careful where you rest the handle since its metling point isn't the same as the head.

2.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware, December 28, 2002

I bought this spatula after reading the good reviews for it, only to have it fall apart 4 months later. Pieces of the plastic head are chipping and peeling off, and I don't even use it more than once a week. I washed it in the dishwasher, but it is supposed to be dishwasher safe, so that shouldn't matter. Buyer beware.

if you are making a cake then you need this spatula. The spatula gives you full coverage when pouring the cake mix out of your bowl. No more loud scraping. This is a GREAT tool!

It's a fine spatula, easy to clean, and has a neat little prop on the handle to keep it from falling into a bowl.

Since I have a child with a compromised immune system, I'm always looking for items I can trust to have fewer bacterial problems. I love this one. No wooden handle to harbor germs. Pulls apart easily to pop in the dishwasher. And to top it off, it works great and it has that groovy little 'rest' on the side of the handle to prevent it from sliding into the bowl when you put it down. Goodbye gooey handle! I'd like to buy more in different sizes.
