Book Description

November 2, 2011

If you intend to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) for remote computing and storage, Python is an ideal programming language for developing applications and controlling your cloud-based infrastructure. This cookbook gets you started with more than two dozen recipes for using Python with AWS, based on the author’s boto library.

You’ll find detailed recipes for working with the S3 storage service as well as EC2, the service that lets you design and build cloud applications. Each recipe includes a code solution you can use immediately, along with a discussion of why and how the recipe works. You also get detailed advice for using boto with AWS and other cloud services.

This book’s recipes include methods to help you:

  • Launch instances on EC2, and keep track of them with tags
  • Associate an Elastic IP address with an instance
  • Restore a failed Elastic Block Store volume from a snapshot
  • Store and monitor your own custom metrics in CloudWatch
  • Create a bucket in S3 to contain your data objects
  • Reduce the cost of storing noncritical data
  • Prevent accidental deletion of data in S3

If you are interested in AWS, Python or both, this is well worth your money. The author of the book is also the author of the Boto library, and he is one of the experts on AWS as well.

Cloud computing is still young, and AWS is one of the most powerful clouds available at this moment. The opportunities are endless, and with Boto you can build your own solutions, to your own needs. Pick up a copy. Read, and let yourself be inspired to build your own solutions.

(As author of 'Programming Amazon EC2' I am somewhat biased on AWS. But having done numerous projects with Boto (Redis, Postgres, SOLR, etc.) I became a true fan.)

S3 and EC2 are two of Amazon Web Services' (and boto's) most complicated pieces. While there is a good bit of reference material available for them, Python and AWS Cookbook shows some wonderful, concise examples of how it all fits together. There are also some excellent tips and best practices included between the recipes.

At under $25, this is definitely worthwhile.

I was very excited to see an O'reilly book on leveraging Python in an AWS environment, however when I received the book, my excitement quickly faded. Unlike most "Cookbooks" from O'reilly, this was barley large enough to be called a book; it was so small in fact they didn't have room to print a title on the binding.

The topics discussed where relevant to AWS and there was a bit of python code included in the book, but I think the API reference material on the AWS site is a better source of ideas and documentation then this book. It almost feels as if the content of this books was to be an outline for the finished product, but no one ever bothered to flush it out.

All in, I am a HUGE fan of the "Cookbook" format and O'Reilly Media reference books in general, but I have to encourage people to pass on this one. The internet will prove to be a better reference then this when it comes to leveraging Python in AWS.
