I thought I was so clever when my engine conked out in a parking lot 2 weeks ago. I tracked the problem to my fuel pump. At first a jiggle of the wires would activate it, then tapping the fuel lines. After only a week I was wailing on it with a small tap hammer. I ordered this replacement pump just a day too late and got stranded on Thanksgiving weekend, unable to restart it no matter how much of a beating I gave it.

I set aside the day after being towed home for the repair. The operation would have been a snap except for the unfortunate surprise that my Contour had different connections on the pump than were on the replacement. Apparently, the change occurred in the middle of the 99 model year (probably the "98.5" version I've heard rumors of). I had used the Amazon model checking feature and it claimed it would work in my car but it didn't, at least, not right out of the box. A call/trip to your local parts store should verify if any adverse changes were made to this area. I had to procure a separate adapter cable to translate between the car's wiring connector and the one on the pump. A pity they couldn't just include such a simple connector. Other than that, the fit was exact and I would have had the repair completed in about an hour. All in all, I think this was a very reasonably priced part and a simple DIY project.
