Literate tale of meeting, intermingling, cultures, December 1, 2011
This review is from: Q Colony (Paperback)
Q Colony is a literate SF novel in the form of three memoirs found on a planet inhabited by intelligent humanoid aliens and a small colony of human scientists. These documents tell the story of the decline of the human colony and the careers and relationships of the colony's leaders and their multiracial (part-human, part-native) children. While there are some adventure elements, primarily it is a story about love and conflict between men and women, parents and children, and two cultures, each alien to the other but drawn irresistibly together. Robert Thurston is a good writer and his three first-person narratives skillfully draw interesting, likable characters in interesting, sometimes affecting, situations. A good piece of work; I wish Thurston did more of these serious novels (I also recommend Alicia II) instead of BattleTech and Battlestar Galactica tie-ins.
