5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant early work from a a brilliant band, June 15, 2000
This review is from: Q&a With Dean Martin (Audio CD)
Something for Kate are a three-piece band from Melbourne Australia.

This album is a re-package of their early EPs - Dean Martin and The Answer to Both Your Questions, with the original line-up. Paul Dempsey : Vocals/Guitar, Clint Hyndman : Drums and Julian Carroll : Bass.

Let me start by saying if you like loud powerful vocals (not metal, but beautifully hoarse), creative songwriting and magic guitar then this is the next purchase you should make.

The songs are beautifully constructed, with large sounds and awesome lyrics that really make you think.

They are one of the best original Australian bands going round at the moment, and it's only a matter of time before they become recognised as one of the best Australian bands of the modern music scene.

This album will get you hooked, and believe me, you will want to hear more.

The current bass player Stephanie Ashworth was recently scouted by Courtney Love to join Hole. Steph turned this offer down, to remain with SFK. This should give you some sort of an idea about awesome this band is.

Buy it now! And tell all those you meet, about this band from Australia. And if you ever get the chance to see them live - do it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Something a little extra for the fans, June 14, 2000

"tricky_kid" (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Q&a With Dean Martin (Audio CD)
Q&A With Dean Martin is a re-release of two early SFK EPs (7 tracks), Answer to Both Your Questions and Dean Martin (3 tracks).

Both were before their first album, Elsewhere for 8 Minutes, but the instensity of that release was obviously already there.

Heavily rock based, with loud guitars and a great rhthym section, Q&A is a welcome addition to SFK's catalogue. Of course, the best part of the album is Paul Dempsey's lyrics, and the tortured voice which delivers them.

Lyrics range from pondering everyday activites ("I used to tie double knots..." on Clint) to anger at the way people treat others (All you can say is 'It's alright'...WRONG ANSWER'" on the sensational Dean Martin).

This release just reinforces SFK's talent, and it still confounds me as to why they aren't even more popular than they are. If your a fan, you cannot be without this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where it all began..., March 21, 2004

This is where the band started. It's a re-release of the bands first EP, and their next single. Let me start by saying if your new to Something for Kate, get "Echolalia" or "Elsewhere for 8 minutes" before buying this, it'll get you started alot nicer.

Paul's voice in this album is alot more rough, not as refined than in his newer stuff. But is that a bad thing? certainly not, every tone he gives is driven by powerful emotion. His voice can be intrepreted in 2 ways... brilliant or horrible. You'll either love it or hate it. I think you can tell which side of the fence im on.

The songs are all wonderfully contstructed, the only poor song here is "clint", the rest i love to death. Admitedlly, it took me awhile to get into this album, when i first heard it, i hated it. Now i think it's their second best album (next to Elsewhere for 8 minutes).

I definentely reccomend it to all SFK fans.
