4.0 out of 5 stars Hit the 'record' button
I purchased this item -- with 4 Swann Mega Flood Security Camera -- back in July 2008 and it is working fine so far. I gave it a 4 star for the following reasons:

Motion Sensor Recording - There are 4 levels (0-3) of sensitivity from which to select and you can set the area. I have tested this over and over and it works just fine with the cameras I am using...

I have tested this over and over and it works just fine with the cameras I am using with this unit.

- READ THIS: Once you are in the motion detector setup page, you need to use your remote to move it to the "AREA" section so you can set the area. Once you are in there, (this is where this unit loses 1 star) it's best to use both hands but you will get used to it ... the "STOP" button on the DVR will change the sensitivity level. Use the remote directional buttons to move the grid around. Once you are at a location you want to detect motion, hit the middle button (between the directional buttons) on the remote to select the location. From there you can use your remote button to add more detection grids. To DELETE a grid, you have to set the sensitivity to 0 and move it over the grid and hit 'select'.

Viewable on my laptop - every time my motion lights come on outside. I pop up the PC viewer to see if anything's up. This has saved me many trips.

Features - although the user interface (factored into the loss of 1 star in rating) is not very friendly, there are many features you can change .. including the 'reset to defaul' feature, which resets everything back to default. You can set the fps, the hours to record (either non-stop or by motion), video quality, etc,.

But remember to hit the RECORD button once you have set everything up or else ... it won't record. To get into the setup menu, you have to hit the STOP button to stop the recording. Again, user interface not so great but it has been working for me just fine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good For The Money; Buy w/ 500GB Hard Drive, June 8, 2009

This product is fine for the money. Just don't expect too much in terms of playback quality or storage. The playback quality just doesn't do my camera justice. It's just fine, however, for most applications. The biggest problem is with storage. The 250GB hard drive is only enough to store 2 days worth of continous, 24-hours-a-day recording on the "highest" quality setting at 30 frames per second - and that's with just one camera! You can reduce the quality setting to increase the storage, but the decrease in picture is noticeable. Instead, I opted to reduce the FPS to 15. Doing so gained me 3 additional days of storage. If you don't need continous recording, the motion detection option will give you the most storage. Whatever the use, I would recommend buying this machine with the 500GB hard drive upgrade.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, if/when it works., May 18, 2009

This review is from: Q-See QSD6204-250 4 Channel MPEG4 DVR with Remote Internet Monitoring and Pre-installed 250GB Hard Drive (Electronics)
I had a few issues with this product and had to send it back; I suppose I should have listened to all the negative reviews.

As for my experience, the remote would randomly not work, the hard drive would not always be detected and while motion control alarm is active it often freezes to a constant *BEEEP* and the unit would become unresponsive. It appeared to happen whenever there was constant movement in frame.

I'm afraid I cannot recommend this unit.

This product does exactly what I need...to monitor things happening around my house when I am not present. When not home, I turn the system on. Upon return home, I check if there are anything strange that occurred and if so, review what has been saved on the DVR. A GREAT PRODUCT!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not happy with Q-See quality, October 25, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Q-See QSD6204-250 4 Channel MPEG4 DVR with Remote Internet Monitoring and Pre-installed 250GB Hard Drive (Electronics)
As of this date I haven't had much time to try this DVR out, but because the trouble I am having with the cables that came with the Q-See QSC48030 cameras and the Q-See QS100B Video & Power extension cables, I must post this now.

This is what I bought with this order:
Q-See QSC48030 High Resolution Weatherproof CCD Camera w/80ft of Night Vision (Color)

Q-See QS100B Video & Power 100 Foot BNC Male Cable w/2 Female Connectors

Please check my reviews of those items. This will explain in detail the trouble I had. The reason for the bad rating, even though I haven't had trouble with this device yet, is because you cannot use this alone. You must use it with cameras, and the cable comes with the cameras. Plus, they are all the same brand, so they should together flawlessly.

I will edit this review when new information arises.
