5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and entertaining
This was a fun, entertaining, and, er... explosive Star Trek book. The Enterprise plays host to a Tizarin wedding between two rival families, Lwaxana Troi arrives as a Federation ambassador, and just when you thought it was gonna be boring, Q shows up for the party. This was a fun, entertaining, and, er... explosive Star Trek book. The Enterprise plays host to a Tizarin wedding between two rival families, Lwaxana Troi arrives as a Federation ambassador, and just when you thought it was gonna be boring, Q shows up for the party. Peter David is an amazing author (the best of all the Star Trek novel writers in my not-so-humble opinion), not only because of the humour he incorporates, but for being brave enough to team up the formidable Lwaxana Troi and the troublesome Q. As you can imagine, some of the dialogue is fantastic. The writing is brilliant throughout and the characters are just as they should be. This is one heck of a novel, and definitely one of those that should have been made into an episode. (Q getting chased across the Enterprise by Lwaxana in a suit of armour? - I rest my case). OK, maybe it isn't quite so great as "Imzadi", but hey, it's fun to read, original and full of non-stop action. What more couldja want?

5.0 out of 5 stars I actually laughed OUT LOUD reading this great story..., November 20, 2000
I can't think of a more entertaining premise to The Next Generation than having Troi's Mother suddenly wield the power of Q. We saw what happened when Riker held it for a short term, but oh the possibilities if Lwaxana could be in that same situation... With 'Q In-Law' we find out exactly what that situation might have been like.

I rarely (if ever) laugh out-loud by myself while reading almost anything--especially a science fiction novel...but I sure did while reading this one, and more than once, I might add. I simply cannot spoil the enjoyment of this story by revealing too much of the plot, but suffice it to say that Q regrets his allowing Lwaxana to wield this power in a supreme way. Peter David is certainly one of THE BEST Trek authors out there, and this one is certainly one of THE most entertaining Trek stories of all-time. I found myself just WISHING on more than one occasion as I read this book that they had made this one into an actual episode--it would rank as one of the best I assure you. Now if you like this story, do yourself a BIG favor and pick up Peter David's fantastic 'Q Squared'--it is everything this one is (but not as funny) and a lot MORE. Easily one of the most complex Trek stories ever written, and also one of the most satisfying as well. Only serious Trek fans need apply if you know what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars The funniest Star Trek book ever!, April 9, 2000
This has to be, without a doubt the funniest Star Trek book ever. Peter David is my favourite ST writer, and I love all his books, especially 'Imzadi'. I think that and Q-in-law should definately have been made into ST:TNG episodes. My favourite part of the book was when Lwaxana was chasing Q through the ship, because it's great to see him get what he deserves for once! There were also some good scenes with Riker and Troi. The other story, about the Tizarin wedding was also well written, and the two stories balanced each other well. Buy it if you like your Star Trek books with humour, Q, and lots of character interaction. Don't buy it if you hate Q, you like 'serious' Star Trek and if you like reading about the Enterprise getting blown up. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars An experiment in controlled chaos., February 22, 2004

This book has a very deserved reputation for being one of the funniest pieces of Star Trek fiction ever written. Viewers and readers all know what Lwanana Troi is like, and they all know what Q is like, so just imagine the consequences if the two should meet. Star Trek writers have to be very careful when using Q, and Peter David is a master of it. I actually laughed out loud several times while reading this book, and the ending gives a whole new meaning to the saying "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars STNG #18 - Q-In-Law - An outstanding early David novel!, September 7, 2003

If you've read many of the earlier Star Trek The Next Generation novels to include Peter David's work, you will have found that his stories are among the most intriguing, hilarious and captivating among them. "Q-In-Law" is no exception to that and, in fact, this particular novel is a step above his already high standard of writing. Few of Star Trek's authors' capture the characters as well as Peter David does and even fewer are capable of dignified comedy with the characters as Peter David is.

The premise:

The Enterprise is chosen as the site for a wedding between two powerful but rivaled families of the space faring merchant raced called the Tizarin. As is custom, Captain Picard is quite happy to be hosting the wedding right up to the point in which the Federation delegate from Betazed shows up, Lwaxana Troi.

Captain Picard now finds himself attempting to dodge the romantic overtures from Lwaxana Troi and still run his ship. Everything seems to be going smoothly until Q shows up to examine the human concept of love. Everything seems to fall apart from there. Q's experiment in love with Lwaxana Troi turns haywire on him and from there you will find that you're reading one of the most hilarious and engrossing early STNG novels!

The Audio Tape:

As an added bonus, this particularly great story was produced as an audio book as well! It is made even better having been read by Majel Barrett and John de Lancie themselves. This audio book is certainly a great way to spend three hours on the highway!

I highly recommend this novel and the audio tape to any and all fans of Star Trek as they're both extraordinarily entertaining! {ssintrepid}

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! Every ST:NG fan should read this book!, May 8, 1999
By A Customer
If there was ever any doubt that Peter David understands and writes Star Trek characters better than anyone else this is Exhibit A to prove it is true! Not only are all the characters in character, but their interactions with each other and reactions to each other ring true as well. The interaction between Lwaxanna and Q is a perfect example and is absolutely priceless. This is especially true of the ending - wherein both charcters are at their best. Or worst. Of course, with these two characters that's pretty much the same thing. After almost falling asleep during the dreadfull Star Trek:Insurrection i only have three questions. Why don't the Powers That Be include Lwaxanna Troi and Q in their next film? Why don't they have Peter David write it? Why don't they base it on this wonderful book!!?

I'd been trying to find this book for years. Given my experiences reader Mr. David's Trek novels, I figured this would be another exciting, entertaining, and witty voyage of the Enterprise-D. But to my surprise, it was rather bland.

Some things PAD gets right, like Lxwanna and Q. Other things, he seems to be doing wrong - he doesn't seem to be giving Capt. Picard appropriate dialogue at all, and there's far too much talk and far too little action. Given what he does with Q in the superior Q-Squared, this book is bland and pointless.

At the same time, this is better than a good deal of the Trek books out there and a pretty good Q story. But Trekkies and PADians shouldn't expect very mcuh from this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Next Generation Fun, February 9, 2004
By A Customer
This is a light-hearted Star Trek novel, telling the story of the romance between Lwaxana Troi and Q. It would likely be confusing to those unfamiliar with the TNG episodes about Q and the episodes about Lwaxana. For those who have seen them, however, this is a funny romp. The ending seems to happen too quickly, but is satisfying.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best TNG novel EVER, September 1, 2003
By
I fell in love with this book the day it came out...everyone that I know that likes TNG borrows it, I am surprised it still holds together, its so worn out. I have always liked the Q and Lwaxana characters, so pitting the two of them together, using the Enterprise as their playground was just priceless. I just could not put the book down, it was that good...the only novel I finished the same day I started on. And when the Audio version came out? I scooped that thing up. Having John DeLancie and Majel Barrett, the actors that portary the main characters was a smart move ... it made the audio book as good as the print version!

Hey, Worf! Over here! I'll buy a ticket! (you must read/hear to figure out the joke)

5.0 out of 5 stars Lwaxanna Troi + Q, 2gether, 4ever?, March 1, 2002

What jumps out of this book are the things that you don't expect. There is so much oddball humor in this book that it makes "the Trouble With Tribbles" look like funeral service. For example, Q reveals that secret of the universe is the avocado. The hinge of this book is a quick fling that Lwaxana Troi has with Q. Of course, this pre-dates the flirting that Q had with Janeway, but, hey, that series haws been cancelled.

Lwaxana Troi and Q together-why it reminds me of the Honeymooners! You see great character interaction, which is the best part of any story, since special effects are getting so boring since they are so easy to do. And people are the reason why we are here on earth, anyways.

I think this book would be a great for a reunion episode, although I don't think it could be recycled for "Enterprise." Q would be no problem to introduce into the series, but you need Majel Barret to spar with him and push the godling around.

The subplots are also gems, one of which is Wesley getting an alien love slave that he doesn't want. She is agreeable to everything, but he isn't. Funniest line in the book : Slave to Wesley "I'm sorry fro apologizing." Peter David makes Wesley Crush look good. And that is worth a Nobel Prize!
