3.0 out of 5 stars Outdated book, but valuable for some uses
The book itself is the "learn by programming" which works for some people and not for others. The others is mainly looking for answers for there problem which this bokk probably will not give you. However if you are inituative and can see outside the box you learn a lot of programming from the book and it is from the most basic to advanced topics included. The book is...

4.0 out of 5 stars A great book for beginning programmers., December 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: QBasic By Example, Special Edition (Paperback)
The increasing obsolescence of the QBasic language does not eliminate the need for fundamental programming knowledge for beginners provided by "QBasic by Example." Coding QBasic is an excellent stepping stone for learning how to program. Several fundamental programming concepts are covered in this book such as general program structure, if-then-else statements, and loops. The book also has important information for beginners on understanding how programs and computers work.

I was a little disappointed that the book does not cover ALL of the QBasic commands. However, the most frequently used commands are explained very clearly with ample use of easy to read program examples and well organized chapters. The author obviously knows how the human mind learns best and this book images his experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars QBasic By Example- a book for all people, October 15, 2000
This review is from: QBasic By Example, Special Edition (Paperback)
I'm a fairly experienced programmer, having programmed since 1992 lightly in QBasic. I was pretty sure that I knew most of what there was to know about QBasic. So, you can understand that I was hesitent to actually read this book. When I did, however, I learned an enormous amount of commands that I didn't have a clue about earlier. As well, it taught me how to structure my code. I recommend this book strongly to anyone who wants to learn to program. Even if you're experienced and want a review, this is the one for you. I give it five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Must Have Book For Beginning QBASIC, September 10, 2000
This review is from: QBasic By Example, Special Edition (Paperback)
This is Greg Perry at his best. The book is well written, well structured and will have the novice writing good programs in no time. Having never programmed before I was able to write a few involved programs after reading only 2/3 of the book. Perry peppers the lessons with meaningful examples and writes in a clear, easy to understand style. I recommend this book to anyone trying to learn QBasic. This should stand as an example to all programming books.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book explains the code, January 20, 1998
This review is from: QBasic By Example, Special Edition (Paperback)
A lot of Qbasic books cover a lot of program structure and demonstrate that structure without first explaining the code thats in them. Qbasic by Example focuses on teaching you the code. All exhamples are simple and easy to follow. You can jump to any chapter and learn a command or keyword that you need without being lost. This is an excellent book. I use it as a reference manual.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excelent book. Essential for begginers., March 31, 1999
By A Customer
This is an excelent book, looking over all the major aspects of Qbasic, teaching you step-by-step how to create a sucessful Qbasic program. This book is great for begginers, but not for experienced programers who want to learn more about QBasic. I have been programing in QBasic for nearly 5 years and I only used it for my first year. But without it I could have never been such a good programer. Highly recommended for beginners.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Remarable Book For Young Teens., May 3, 2005
By
Neil W. Fisk (Edmonton, Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
Greg Perry makes learning in this edition easy, and very enjoyable for people who want to learn qbasic. Even today there are many people that use the language, especially young teens.

The latest compiler has taken on a new image and GUI from a third party software vendor written for windows, if your not using the program that was provided with MS-DOS and windows 3.1 many years ago. Greg's book clips away functions and keywords that you will learn directly in qbasic. Each chapter takes you through a series of techniques that are common among all computer languages; things such as loops, data sorting, printing, and graphics.

One very good aspect of the book I like is that you can skip to chapters that describe keywords, and use them quickly, without any real knowledge of the language. The general layout in book is pretty good too.All the block print for programming is highlighted in blue, which clearly defines many short lessons throughout the chapters, and the rest of the book.

If you never programmed before, I would recommend this language, along with Greg's book. I've read and learned programming from titles in C/C++, but qbasic is a real delight. It's not all that difficult, and the syntax is very sparse, unlike C, where the scope of it's variables can go out of range. Semi-colons play a big part in C too, which adds fustration for most people.

The keywords are just like the english language with symbols, which anyone can learn very quickly. In just a few short hours, you can have a full color application up and running with greg's book, it's a truely remarkable presentation in learning to program. If you desire programming with windows, then qbasic will prepare you for Visual Basic which is known for rapid application development, and is gaining popularity around the world.
