I bought this at Home Depot and took it back the next day. If you are installing 8" tiles then this cutter would be ideal. It barely fits 12" tiles and the cutting guide gets obscured so you can't reliably make cuts where you want. It also has a tendency to crush rather than cut the edges. I had to resort to using a large pair of snips/scissors (only $17).

I also bought this Roberts 30002 vinyl tile cutter at my local Home Depot. If fact, I also found a problem with the bearing on the cutter arm. I took the first one back because his bearing broke. I brought the new one home and, low and behold, this bearing also broke. I am going to return this and look for a better product. This product should be taken off the shelves at all Home Depot stores until the problem with this bearing is corrected.

i thought this would be a great instrument for cutting 12" vinyl tile, but there is a design flaw. The bar the slides the blade up and down actually reaches the tile before the blade and begins to crush it, resulting in a partially cut tile and a partially crushed tile. Taking back to Home Depot.

I am very surprised by the negative reviews here. I just picked one of these up for $50 at Home Depot, and immediately fell in love with it.

I recently tiled my master bedroom, and the most difficult part was cutting the edge tiles. I found using a straightedge and razor knife to be very challenging. The straightedge would often slip as I was cutting.

I just built a closet, and decided to give this thing a try for putting in the floor. What a difference! I found that it cut fairly quickly and extremely smooth. It fit the twelve inch tiles just fine.

Two drawbacks for me. One, I wish it was large enough to cut a 12 inch tile diagonally. Second, the built in measure gauge is metric and standard, with the metric side facing the cutting area. This makes the standard side very impractical. The measurements should have been embossed right on the cutting surface itself. Not a big deal, I make my measurements right on the tile anyway. I took of one star for these two items.

There were three of these at my Home Depot. Two of the boxes looked like they had been returned. I took the bottom box, which was unopened. Perhaps that gave me a better chance than most, I don't know. I will admit that flooring a closet is not putting the tool to a thorough test. I have two more bedrooms to do. If I run into any problems I will come back and edit this review, but right now this has become one of my favorite tools.

I purchased one of these vinyl tile cutters from Home Depot. At first it worked well and cut the entire 12" length of the tile rather well, considering the cost of the cutter. After a while, I found pieces of some type of washer on the floor and the cutter then only provided a clean cut of the first half of the tile and the back half became problematic because the washer must have maintained the pressure on that portion of the cutting blade. I returned the cutter to Home Depot and exchanged it for a new one. I brought it home and began using it. After a few tiles, the mysterious washer was in pieces on the floor again and only the front half of the tile cut was usable and the back suffered from the same problem as the first cutter.
This is a very good economical cutter, when working. Unfortunately, there is a key washer that is the weak link in the "Chain". It is not a conventional washer that can be replaced out of a junk box, but a convex shaped washer that cannot take the torque. Thos people who experienced problems cutting the back portion of their tiles, probably had cutters which already had broken or missing washers, because when it is present, the unit cuts well.

I bought one of these cutters and once I got it it seemed to be sturdy and well put together, problem is it would not cut VCT at all.

As long as you press down very firmly as you cut, and with a slow, deliberate movement (takes 2-3 seconds to make a cut...it's not like cutting paper in one mere second), while your other hand firmly holds the tile in place, it'll work great. I cut over 34 heavy duty, Armstrong vinyl peel-and-stick tiles without any trouble at all. The cutting action does cut from both the top and bottom, to meet in the middle and this allows for less shifting of the tile beneath the blade, so it works only for a straight-line cut. If you need to cut anything more than a straight line, you'll need a metal square-ruler tool and a heavy-duty cutting blade, or other tools. I just needed straight cuts, so this tool saved me!
