A very poor choice, even for a novice,

This review is from: NEW QUALITY APPALACHIAN ~ MOUNTAIN DULCIMER w DLX CASE
The mountain dulcimer is the quintessential Appalachian instrument. Simple, sweet, yet capable of enormous musical expression.
A mountain dulcimer also typifies the best in American folk craftsmanship. There are more than 100 luthiers in the United States making dulcimers full time. Many produce student dulcimers that are far superior to this mass-produced instrument, built with low-cost labor in a Romanian factory owned by Trophy Music, a large American company that has outsourced most or all of its production outside the United States. This instrument is produced specifically to supply a mass distribution market through outlets like Amazon, a few large music retailers and, of course, Big-Box-Marts. The target consumers are impulse buyers unfamiliar with the instrument, and who lack the time and inclination to research before they buy. To call this low-end Apple Creek the "best student dulcimer available" is simply absurd. It is built with commodity plywoods and cheap Chinese-made tuners. The sound is thin and the intonation (pitch accuracy) is dubious. The sustain is notably weak. New players who buy them frequently lose interest, which is why this model turns up in such large numbers at such low prices on eBay. If you're minded to buy a mountain dulcimer for the first time, take an extra few minutes to visit on-line dulcimer player forums, where you will find an uncommonly friendly community that will point you in the right direction. You'll quickly discover that for $125 or less, you can buy a very nice student dulcimer from an independent maker or a small American factory. In either case you'll get a hand-crafted instrument, with meaningful human support if you face problems. It would be untrue to call the Apple Creek line purely terrible. Their instruments are reasonably consistent, and there are other dulcimers produced in Asian factories that are worse. There are a tiny handful of builders in the US, too, producing poor-quality instruments that should be avoided. But this Apple Creek is generally of much lower quality than the student dulcimers you can find at nearly the same price from an independent American craftsman. And, more importantly perhaps, it lacks the *authenticity* that elicits so much love for this simple instrument in the first place. If you're even remotely interested in building a lasting relationship with the mountain dulcimer, I strongly encourage you to look elsewhere.

not worth the money,

This product is made from inferior woods, the peg box has poor design creating a difficulty in keeping in tune. The plywood sides and back are very limiting for sustaining tone, and can not create the richness that comes from solid hardwoods, which is so easily found in the USA. This overseas nock-off is not for anyone , especially for beginners, this would make for a bad experience all around. My advice before you buy- buy an American made mountain dulcimer, it was invented here, not in a Asian factory. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

This review is from: NEW QUALITY APPALACHIAN ~ MOUNTAIN DULCIMER w DLX CASE
I knew when I ordered this dulcimer it would not be of the McSpadden quality I wish I could afford, but I am pleasantly surprised by the richness of its tone. It arrived precisely when expected, packed carefully, and as I already had an electronic tuning device, getting it tuned to D-A-D was easy. [My original instrument, built from a kit nearly 40 years ago, had only 3 strings so I removed the "extra" 4th drone string - too difficult to tune exactly.]
I am a novice player so this instrument is the perfect place to start. Hope to be able to afford an upgrade soon, but until then this instrument will do nicely. Plus the case is very nice with a pocket big enough for extra strings, picks, etc. THANKS, Applecreek!
