Queen Mum,
By
This review is from: Queen Mum (Paperback)
Juno, an upper middle class English housewife is married to Manny, and has two teenage girls. Their family believes in eating organic, celebrating the arts and culture, and leading structured lives. Juno is about to shake things up by becoming a contestant on Queen Mum, a reality television show in which two mums with differing lifestyles switch places for two weeks with a winner declared at the end. Ally is Juno's neighbour and close friend who lives with husband Tom and son Ben. Their family has been damaged by tragedy and Ally wonders how she will cope without Juno for two whole weeks.
The decision to go on Queen Mum will force both families to face some difficult truths and take a closer look at their own lives. This was a touching and at times funny book. It was interesting to see the difference in how the characters perceive themselves and what was shown on the reality show. Inserting clips from the show's dialogue into the narrative also helped to keep the theme alive throughout the novel. By the end, I was rooting for all the characters, even those who at first seemed unlikable. A great vacation read! |
